Re:Front Drive Pulley Nut Maint. 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Well i have another victim to add to the list here.

I was doing reg main on my friends 05 silverado with 50k of non aggressive riding miles on it and when i checked the drive pulley nut as a reg maint item i found the nut extremely loose just hanging on a few threads ready to fall off!

And we just got back from a 300 mile road trip from going to the Americade in Lake George NY where we were crusing 70-75mph on RT87 where drive pulley had decided to come off at the very least we would have had problem to deal with on the side of road to worst case if belt got tied up on in rear wheel and locked it up at 70-75mph or if not that the pulley chewing the shaft up on the x-fer case resulting in an $800+ repair at the shop which thankfully for him neither of which happened.

He is the 2nd owner and about it 6-7 yrs ago with low miles from the original owner and my friend added cobra long shots and K&N air filter in stock air cleaner housing.

And of course when i went ti the local Yami dealer which is a big dealership thats been in my area since mid-late 70's and you guess it,they didnt have a new retaining washer and nut in stock and parts will be in early next wk .

Point is for my R* and anyone else's R* i work on i make checking the retaining nut on the drive pulley a 1x yrly chk at a min and if someone either has an agressive riding style with esp with perf mods and or puts a lot of miles on that the case i would chk the pulley nut 2x yrly.

When i reinstall the pulley nut i will not only use a new retaining washer that you bend the sides up on but i will also use loctite on it too.

BTW,i have a spare pulley nut & washer for my 06 Silverado which i tried on my friends 05 silverado and they are not only a diff thread type but the stock nut on my 06 is 30mm and nut on his 05 R* silverado is considerable larger @ 36mm no to mention the locking washer between the nut pulley are totally diff design too.

The 05 is made of then metal with teeh on the id that grip the output shaft of x-fer box and on my 06 uses a thicker then normal metal washer between nut & pulley and theres a raise thinner collar on the retianing nut you STAKE into a grove in the x-fer case shaft to lock it.

When i went from stock 32t to 31t drive pulley on my 06 silverado i used some loctite on the pulley nut for an additional safety factor.

============

Just an FYI,the pt#'s you listed are for 06 & newer R* and will not fit my friend 05 silverado.

I found when i looked up my friends 05 R* that the 06 and newer R* uses a diff pt# drive pulley nut and locking washer deal like you listed that i also have as a spare set at home for my 06 thats different then the 05 and older r* setup i am working on in my garage at this time.

I have an o6 R* and even the threads are much finer on the smaller 30mm nut it comes stock with vs the 05 R* pulley nut that has more of a coarse thread and is a larger 36mm nut too.

And the 06 R* uses a std design thicker flat washer between the nut & pulley and the pulley nut also has a raised shoulder you STAKE into a recess in the x-fer case shaft to hold/lock the nut into position.

But the 05 R* uses a very thin type washer with 2 tabs/wings on it that you bend over the pulley nut to lock it after you trq it down which comes loose too.

But if i were a yamaha engineer i would have not only used that locking washer with 2 tabs i would have also used the nut with the rasied collar you stake into recess is x-fer case shaft along with some loctite too.

Then that dang drive pulley nut would never come loose beinbg a safety issue or something that can lead to an $800+ repair at the yami shop if the x-fer case shaft is trashed in the process like has already happened to a few guys here in rsc.

Scott, I was looking that up for Shacky as he is the one that asked above in a post and his bike is listed in his profile as an 07. I looked up the shaft that the pulley mounts to and it does appear that 06 and up are different. They have a 5vn prefix designation and 05 and older have a 4wm prefix with the same mid pt # of 1755A. Apparently they were using the same shaft that they used on the 1600's until 06 and changed due to the problem with the nut.

Re:Front Drive Pulley Nut Maint. 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Well, it happened to me today. I had read about this but ignored taking the time to check it.

Went on a charity ride today and coming west back across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland(just over 4 mi long) we were on the down slope luckily and I noticed I had nothing. Engine was running fine but no acceleration or drive power. Coasted almost to the end of the bridge and got a push from a couple of riders that were behind me to get it to the shoulder off of the bridge. Called a friend to get a ride home to get my truck/trailer. Went back and picked up the wife(she stayed with the bike) and the bike and brought it home. Once we were home, took it off the trailer and had it jacked up, apart and repaired in about an hour and a half. Oh and by the way I have dual exhaust now. No damage was found on the teeth of the pully or the jackshaft. Some small shavings were present but no damage. I was really lucky. Had a 30mm socket and red loctite on hand to finalize the repair properly. Now back to riding ...

=====================================================

Hi DAVE,Just had a thought,i bet if yami had simply drilled a small hole thru the drive shaft in the x-fer case and used a cotterpin to hold the nut in place so it couldn't come loose just like cars with drum brakes used in the 50's-60's along with using loctit too there would be no more issues with drive pulley nuts coming loose.

What do you think?

But that would require not drilling too large of a hole in the shaft for the cotterpin that it comprimises the integrity/strength of the x-fer shaft where the hole for cotterpin is.

Maybe thats why yami didnt go that route in the 1st place,in that case too bad yami didnt use the locking washer with 2 tabs that are bent over pulley nut used on 05 R* along with also using pulley nut like on my 06 that has a raised shoulder on it you stake into a narrow recess channel in the x-fer shaft along with using loctite for an additional layer of safety which collectively should get the job done too,what do you think?

Excellent story!!
Does that "05 have teeth that grip the shaft? The Fische does not show them.
You can see the two outside tabs but nothing on the inner circle.

Photo below showing my project '06 engine with chain sprocket.
these are '06 components.
