Why not just drill a hole in the nut and safety wire it like aircraft do?
That way you do not have to damage the output shaft threads at all.

If you do drill the shaft put a nut on first then drill the hole and remove the nut to sort of clean up the threads, Put on a new nut. It is still a risk though. I think safety wiring the nut is a better
choice. Those nuts cost $10.

Re:Front Drive Pulley Nut Maint. 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Quick question, folks. I have a 2000 Roadie. Intend to pull the cover tonight and check the bolt.

When the bike was in the shop a couple years back for the engine rebuild/big bore install, I'm *pretty sure* (but not 100%) that the tech said he did something to make sure the front pulley wouldn't loosen - I'm assuming he just used red loctite. I'll know better once I open it up...

That said - when I open it up, if it IS loose (or is easily loosened?) and I re-torque it after applying red loctite, what torque should I use? I know "stock" torque is 63 ft lbs, but that's for a stock 1600.

I'm running 108 CI (1775 cc) with cams, HC pistons - the works - never been on a dyno but it's way more powerful than it was pre-mods - so should I tighten the nut to 100 ft lbs (upper limit of my wrench) or am I going to damage something?

Thoughts?

I would stay with the stock torque.

There are a few that have done this. I chose to use red Loctite. I don't think anyone has drilled the shaft as you would have to remove it, However you want to secure it is up to you though.

Stock torque on that nut is 61 ft. lbs.

Make sure to let the Locktite dry overnight.

A high performance anything does not mean tightening all the bolts more.

Brian, I can't help... I replaced with a Baron's 31 tooth, and threw the 33 tooth original away. Haven't seen a stock pulley in some years now.

Hope someone gets back to you with a real answer shortly.

By the way, I love having gone 31 tooth!
