I'm thinking my stealer knew there was an issue and decided to do a little preventative maint. They always treated me good in the past. Guess I got one of the few good ones...I hope

Welcome.

I have an 07 with 50K miles on it. It also appeared to me both taps were bent over but had worked loose (I ride like I stole it) Thinking the install of new clutch that actually does not slip may have added to the stress on the pully.

It's my feeling that everyone should install the red threadlocker no matter if the nut is loos or not.

I didn't expect anyone to open up the cover and say "Mine was loose" I think it comes loose very quickly once it is loose. I had just ridden 600 plus miles the day before at about 75 MPH, Next day we were just cruising to the Tail of The Dragon when it came off,

And trust me when I say and my passenger will also say, there was no noise, nothing out of the ordinary, nothing, Until it came completely off.

I repaired mine on the trail, and came home and tore it back off to put the thread locker on. If that says anything.

Your all welcome and anyone else who says thanks. I will edit some pics into this org post photobucket was slow tonight. I just wanted to get the info out there before anyone else had the problem.

Not really enough room for a wire. I was about to put an o ring into the threads after the nut, no room.

Lucky the white roller come out and off easy, the about fall out. No idea why they are even needed, I don't really think they are needed. But you can instal new ones easily or maybe clean those up and put some dry lube on them. I think they only really come in contact with the belt when something happens like........ you loose your nuts!

If the white rollers don't touch any thing. How can they be making any noise ? I thought I read on here some where that they were the sourse of the high pitched chirp sound that comes from that part of the bike. If it's not, what's making all the noise ?

the little white rollers are to prevent the belt from lifting over the pully on decell, been there done that its not the rollers making the noise its your belt is out of adjustment or out of alinment , i replaced the rollers greased the rollers ran without the rollers still the chirp readjusted the tension tight loose still the chirp what got rid of the chirp was not letting the dealer change the tire any more he sets the alinment by the hatch marks on the belt tinsioners you cannot do this you have to use a tape maesure and make sure the axial is equal distance on each side from the swingarm wala no chirp

I have an 07 and have had the nut come loose a couple of times. I thought is was because I the exposed pulley cover and that was having somthing to do with it. Mine never came all the way because I could tell when it was getting loose when I would hear the nuts on the back of the pulley cover adapter clang inside of the holes on the pulley. Was thinking about putting the stock cover back on but maybe its not the exposed pulley cover?

The stock cover seems to prevent the nut from going south. But an exposed cover is not the cause. Threadlock the nut. That should do it.

Keep an eye on how your belt is running on the rear pulley. That's how I found mine loose. After coming home from the dragon I noticed that my belt had started running opposite from where it was. checked and found the nut loose.

riding an 04... mine looked fine. Felt tight, washer bent on two sides, however there was few if any threads showing. Is this normal?

IMHO the best way to approach this loose pulley nut issue on our r*'s is to ensure its properly torqued to factory spec using loctite along with the additonal lock washer too.

Then next what do is if your a conservative rider remove pulley cover to check pulley nut status 1x yrly as a main item.

But if ya have mods increasing hp/trq and ride hard/agressive with more rpm/more vibration/more on off gas for more back & forth motion on front pulley i'd then take the extra time to chk pully nut tightness 2x yrly as a maint item.

It only takes a few mins to pull front pulley cover to check puley nut status 1x or 2x yrly, not a big deal.

I feel doing the above is a good proceedure that in most cases would help to significantly reduce the amount of loose pulleys we are seeing here in RSC every riding on.

Taking 15-30 mins yrly to do this may prevent a breakdown on the road at the very least , prevent pulley from destroying the shaft/splines on xfer case resulting in a very costly reapi which has already happened to a few peoples bikes here in RSC,or may prevent an accident should pulley/belt come completely loose/appart getting belt tangled up in the rear wheel locking it up causing an accident though that thankfully doesnt seem to be the norm when the front pulley comes loose.

my '99 has the lock washer. As reference (in case you haven't got this) here's the service manual - page 4-90 shows exploded view. http://www.paulmilner.com/yamaha/handbuch/service_manual_1602_082008.pdf
