I NEED a clutch spring... 10 Months ago
I think his name was Mr. Flash. He sold me his Road Star in April of last year. He'd already bought a Harley to replace it. It seemed like a square deal, and I was happy.

Until I got it home, and started to use it a little harder, and... the clutch would slip in 5th, and 4th, if I got on it.

It's VERY hard for me to believe that he did not know, and 'chose' to not disclose that little matter. But, it is what it is.

In any case, it became my '04 Bobber Build over the past winter, and I've been enjoying it a good bit, since we got to riding again just in the past week or so... But, yesterday, even in 3rd, I could make the clutch slip. It's got 38k miles on it.

SO, my question is: Does anyone have anyone's aftermarket clutch spring they'd like to sell? I've got a gasket on its way already.

If not, I see a new Warrior spring for as little as $22 on eBay. I see an EBC brand 'upgrade' spring, says it's for Warrior, for $40. Or, I even see the Barnett on eBay, starting at $128.

If anyone has a spring for sale, I'm in need.

If any of you who have done the job have any words of wisdom to impart, before I open it up, please share.

Finally, if anyone knows the best deal on any of those replacements, I'm open to savin' a buck whenever I can.

I'm NOT a hard rider by nature, myself, and so, I'm sure even a new Yami Warrior spring would suit my purposes just fine, without going all the way out to the Barnett. But, I'm open to any and all counsel before I engage in this project.

Mine was finicky but was always able to fine adjust the free play in the cable and it would be fine until the next time it needed adjustment.

Without any freeplay even the most heavy-dutiest, strongest, toughest clutch will slip.

If you know there's ample freeplay in the cable, then it's time to open it up while there's still a clutch pack surviving in there and replace the pressure plate spring with your choice of options.

It sure isn't adjustment, I can tell ya that much!

I'll give it a bit more time, but if no one's got one they'd be willin' to part with, a new Yami Warrior spring for $22 is certainly no budget buster!

If you feel like searching around the site, I'm sure you can find several threads I've started over the years on the matter, but to save you the time, get an EBC spring for the Roadstar... It might be the same one for the Warrior... not sure, it's been a while... It's less than $50 and does the job fine. [Don't waste your time or money on another stock spring] I was involved with the prototype development of the EBC spring quiet a few years back with my 1999, and as far as I know, those who have done it are happy. I had to replace the clutch spring on my 2006, shortly after I got it last year, and I went with the EBC. It's been fine ever since. I actually forgot about it until reading this thread.

My biggest advice, BE CAREFUL REMOVING THE OLD GASKET! The case is aluminum and gouges VERY easily. Just be patient. DO NOT USE A GASKET SCRAPER TOOL!!! Trust me... Some people have had good luck with the rotary style gasket removal tools.

Otherwise, it's a pretty straight forward job.

P.S. Obviously it depends on riding style, but 25k miles [give or take 5k odd miles] seems to be the average before the springs starts slipping. Though I'm sure some here will chime in and tell you they have *500,000* miles on theirs and it hasn't slipped yet.
