spit and sputter 4 Months ago

So bike started ok go down the road in 4th at 50 mph like always 1 mile to gas station and just before the station the bike sputters and dies. Now I have a brainfart. Try to start bike and nothing thinking my battery is toast because my truck battery died yesterday. Call my wife to come get me and then my brain wakes up and I wasn't in neutral.Bike starts right up no problem rest of the day.
2007 midnight stock other than after market slip-ons. 38,000 miles never been in the carb,never needed to.Ais still on.A little hard starting first start of day once in a while not always then no matter how long I ride or stop it always starts up right away.So the question is why the sputter and it starting up right away after and running good? Ken
