So can he unbolt it and fix the leak or is there more to it than meets the eye?

From what I'm seeing on the oil flow diagram it looks like he can.

Thank you all for the insight/information.
Texasscott1, I'm pretty sure you're right. It looks to be an oil galley plug. And just to share some useful information (if that IS a COPPER washer). Copper can be "annealed" by heating to red hot and quenching in water. Unlike almost every other metal, this process SOFTENS copper instead of hardening it (to have it seal better). A trick I used to use on copper head gaskets. Works amazingly well! So if this IS just a galley plug (99% sure), then I should be able to remove it, and not loose much oil either. Just what's in the oil passageway.

Anyway, thanks to all again. It's great to have access to this forum. I've been lurking in the background since last July, when i bought my 2002 Silverado. LOVE THIS BIKE!! I've put 12k miles on since July 14th, 2016. After a 15 year break from biking, I guess this proves I'm still interested in riding. The bike had a few problems when I got it. (I knew about some of them.) Nothing I couldn't handle. I've been wrenching on my own bikes from the beginning (about 1977).
Keep the shiny side up!,
Pete

When I got my bike the oil drain plug was stripped and could not get it out without lifting bike on jack to get some space under bike. I had oil and filter on hand so I thought I would try to change it anyway. I removed the bolt you are referring to to try to get oil out but not much came out. I had already removed oil tank drain plug before this one, so I'm unsure if more oil will leak with the oil tank still full. I replaced the copper crush washers and have rode about 4000km since and it still runs. I think it's safe to remove but I'm no expert.
