Brent's Roadie Bobber 4 Years, 4 Months ago
Hey everyone I am new here and hope this is the place for a build thread...

I am still on the hunt for a 2004 or newer Road Star to make into a winter project. For now I will be doing a mass amount of research and recording all my future plans/progress here for everyone to see/criticize. So far this is what I have planned...

Fenders:
Removed/Fenderless
I really dig this look. Although getting caught in the rain is pretty miserable lol.
This is actually my kawi800

Tank:
Sportster Style
I don't care for the wide looking tanks. I like the bike to be as skinny as possible... A Roadie on a diet!

Handle Bars:
Clip on
Gives you that sleek cafe look.

Controls:
pulling the forward controls back (more comfortable with the low bars...)With my legs stretched and my torso leaned over it hurts my back (herniated discs) More of a cafe position works for me. I was also thinking about rigging up a jockey type shift but leaving the stock clutch and foot shift in tacked.

Wheels/Tires:
Black Wheels and can't decide whether I want the spokes all black as well. and most likely a 21" on the front and maybe a 18 or 19" rear? I don't like the disc covering those pretty spokes.
Tires will be that old school tread.

Seat:
Metal no cushion with some hairpin springs... yea. im a badass

Lights:
Old school / simple

More ideas to come...

Air Cleaner:
I am a huge fan of the velocity stacks or strainer looking intakes...I will have to see what kind of performance is behind them for the road star...

Exhaust:
Trying to make this beast get up and go so i should probably go 2 into 1 most likely purchase the exhaust rather than make it so i can count on hp gain. Maybe I will just tweak it a bit for looks. I can't believe how amazing the road stars sound...

Frame:
I would love to go hardtail but with my bad back and girlfriend that is just silly. At least I have the hardtail looks with this type of frame... This winter I will be tearing the bike down to the bare frame, grind off anything i don't need, powder coat and put back together. This is my favorite Roadie bobber... Nice job whoever you are!

Color Scheme:
I have always been a fan of black and bare steel/aluminum... really don't like chrome at all. I love the ratty looking bikes.

Weight Reduction:
Anything that I can remove from the bike (not including lights/directionals) that doesn't make it go. That silly belt cover that may prevent your foot from being sucked in... pfff gone. This is one thing I absolutely love about the Harley motor... So raw i love it!!!

Passenger Seat:
No I am not high. the girly has to ride too! This will be removable... I like the simplistic yet original design to this one....

You get an A+ for posting pics on this site this early in the game. Hell, some of us old-timers here still can't get it right!

Welcome, and what Boatmark said about the A+. You are in exactly the right spot for a thread about bob-ing a Roadie. We have several really nice Bobbers on here already. Do a search on the forum for Bobbers, and you should find three or four.

As for a good base... am i making the correct choice going with the 1700 vs the 1600?

The 1600's will be a lot cheaper, if your going to just strip it down. The 05 and up 1700's, have a better charging system but with minimal lights that shouldn't be an issue. Some of the early 1600's, qualify for a tranny recall, if it hasn't been done.
I'd find a good low mileage 1600, at a steal of a price(there was one in Albuquerque the other day, for 1k). These deals show up if you wait.

Looking forward to seeing this develop. The velocity stack is one of my fav intakes. I may have gone that route if there was a good filter or mesh solution at the time.

Cheaper is better... I mean I know the rev limiter is lower but that can be fixed electronically for what $250?
