My first bike was carbed, then I got the '09 v-star 950. Fuel injected etc. Night and day, turn the key push the button and ride. That bike got ridden 14k miles at all elevations and in all conditions over a 2 year period. It never quit on me, never failed to start, and all I ever did was keep the oil, plugs, and tires in good shape. Once or twice a season I would put lucas FI cleaner through the tank...
If you know what you are doing, and have the tools/equipment, the ECU CAN be reprogrammed.
I have mentioned before that we had Toby's ECU flashed, and his Stryker runs much better now.
The guy that did Toby's is currently working on a flash for the v-star 950, and he said after he gets that done, he will be working on a flash for FI Roadstars.
Yamaha has to program our ECU the way they do for EPA purposes, which means the bike doesn't run as optimally as it could, and all your after market tuners are doing, is over riding the stock ECU.
The other thing we did for Toby's FI stryker, was adust the TPS
(Throttle Position Sensor) and unplug the 02 sensor. The TPS setting was very important for his bike... It wasn't hard to do, requiring a paper clip, multi meter, and some patience...
I would have him tell me how to explain all of this in more detail lol but he is still sleepin'
Right now though, my R* runs extremely well, and I am of the school of thought "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
I do enjoy reading all the write ups about how the AIS
works and so on. Very educational.
