Did you ever get with the mechanic and see what kind of oil he used?
My 2000 clutch started slipping right around 20k miles as well. Weak spring (a known issue on these bikes). Barnett plate fixed that. Put a Barnett conversion in my 2012 when it was only a couple years old as a preventative measure. My 2004 clutch is starting to slip as well. It will be getting the Barnett conversion plate next spring sometime.
Hmmm, seems like a pattern may be developing
I've always run mc specific oil in all these bikes. Yamalube in the beginning with the 2000 (in the family since brand new). Later on, only Mobil1 V-twin and Amsoil 20W-50.

Mine started slipping around 24k too. Started in 2nd and 3rd when I would hammer on. Usually noticed it when merging on the highway.
Barnett fixed me right up. OEM plates still looking good.

If fresh oil or the Seafoam doesn't fix the problem then I will definitely be going to the Barnett clutch. Hopefully I will have the time and the room in my garage to install it myself. As most everyone on this forum knows, wrenching on the bike is just part of the fun.

Thanks for all the replies. Not much play left in the clutch cable. The clutch is holding when stopped but slipping in 2nd and 3rd. Not sure why the clutch is adjust most of the way out because I have never adjusted it. I have fresh Amsoil and fresh filter ready to change out my oil. My concern is what if I have to change the oil 2-3 times to fix the problem. That's a lot of Am$oil.
What about adding Seafoam? I read some post about some folks adding 1.5 oz. of Seafoam? That stuff scares me because I put it in my gas tank once and a month later my gas gauge stopped working but if it solves my slipping clutch then I know its 100% not a bad clutch and I can go ahead and change the oil out.
davej. I have been a member of the original RS1602 forum for since June or July of 2001 and I didn't buy my RS till Dec. 2001. The original forum and this forum have saved my ass a lot of money and time. I just don't post a lot because I am not as smart as the rest of the folks on this forum with regards to wrenching on MCs. Once again, thank all of you for your responses and your continuing to teach me how to wrench.
When I said 2004 I was going from what your profile says. You don't need to be a mechanic to join in. Sometimes we just chat about things as friends. It is good to see some of the original members still watching and hanging around even if it is just in the background. Stick around.

I have a 2001 RS with 22,000 miles. It sat up for about six months so the carburetor got gummed up from the wonderful ethanol fuel we have to use now. Anyway, I took it to my mechanic and had him tune it up and get it running smooth again. I also told him to go ahead and change the oil while he had it. When I got back the clutch started slipping after a few rides during acceleration. I have always changed my own oil and I have always used Amsoil. I did not specify for my mechanic what type oil to use. I need to call today and ask him which brand and type of oil he used. What type oil would make the clutch slip. I think he must have used something with additives that made the clutch start slipping. I just really don't think my clutch is bad and needs replacing. I need you guys, the experts, to give me your opinion. Is it most likely the oil he used? Is my clutch really bad? If it is the oil then how do I fix it? I don't want to run put fresh Amsoil in and then have to flush and change it again to try to remove all the additives that are possibly causing the clutch to slip. Please advise. Thanks in advance.
If I am just in insane and in full denial that I have a bad clutch then feel free to call me on it.

Personally, I'd replace the stock spring with a Barnett plate, in fact I did just that last year when I bought my 01 R*. It's a well know weak part, so why wait when it's so easy & cheap? There's nothing better than the Barnett plate & Yamaha discs.

I didn't see any direct replies regarding using the seafoam initially then replacing all the oil with fresh Amsoil. Any thoughts or concerns regarding adding an 1.5 oz. of seafoam to see if that corrects the problem. I just don't want to replace all the oil with Am$oil then find out, oops, it was the clutch now I have to dump $80 worth of Amsoil and install a barnett spring and Yamaha clutch.

Adding Seafoam to the existing oil to help "correct" it will do nothing. If it were me, I would add about a pint of seafoam to the oil and ride just a few blocks then come home and drain it while its still as warm as possible for the sole purpose of getting as much of the old oil off the clutch plates. Then since not being sure if its the oil or the clutch, I would do an oil change with conventional dino oil and then go from there. Or just do like Tim said and change to a Barnett.

You mentioned buying a Barnett clutch and Yamaha disks. With your mileage it is virtually guaranteed that your OEM plates are still fine if you haven't been dogging it while slipping.
The comment upthread was simply saying Barnett with Yamaha disks is the best combo. Some people cough up a bunch of money for Barnett disks.
All you're likely to need is the spring plate and the replacement gasket. Around $160 all in.

The oil change thing can be a bit tough too... many don't know, but our bikes hold FIVE quarts of oil, but we can only change 4 at a time with each change... which just may be one more reason one oil change may not be enough.
So, go to Wal*Mart and buy some jugs of Shell Rotella T-5 for a couple of oil changes... it just might help, and be a whole lot cheaper than doing it with your pricey Amsoil, only to learn it's just not going to work.

You do know that you can dump the oil in a clean drain pan and use it again if you have to tear down. You don't have to waste it. It wouldn't hurt to just put a Barrnett in it but if it just started to slip after a oil change that would be real suspect to me. Don't worry about a little residual oil still in the system when yo change it. But if you are concerned drain from both oil drain plugs put 2 quarts of cheap motorcycle specific oil in it start it for 20 - 30 seconds like normal then drain it then install the new filter and your new oil
