Look up choke knob trim. That might be what it needs.

Re:sputtering 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Hi,
I just tested My coils and Pickup module temps of coils at time of testing were 86F,both coils tested 0 ohms , with meter set at the 2 lowest levels just to make sure. Wiring harness disconnected from coils . Positive test lead to red/blk post per repair manual .

Pickup Module tested at .3 ohms, again meter set at the 2 lowest levels. Anyone have a part number for the pickup module as I cant seem to find it on parts fiche . Is the pickup module listed with generator ?

Ignition coils are the same , Parts list shows 2 different part numbers for the coils . Price is also different ? one is 69 USD and the other 88 USD.

Bike is a 2000 XV1600 US Model Bike .

Thanks
BobJo

The bikes have one coil for each cylinder. Each coil runs both plugs. You can use an old plug in the boot, touching the end of the plug in the head, to see if your getting spark. Both coils are the same also, so you can switch them around, if it seems like only one cylinder is firing.
If it seems to be both cylinders, then I would suspect the Pickup Coil(Timing trigger). It is located inside the clutch cover on the left side. Check the two wire connection behind the left side cover, and check the wires for damage in that area. There is a test for the PU coil, that is in Clymers, or a Yamaha shop manual. We've seen almost as many coils go bad, as just having had the wires for it mangled.

I think the pick up coil is listed in the Generator section of the parts fiche.
