I go about 150 miles before fuel and have never hit reserve but as Dave said, it depends on your riding style.

Yep, your right wrist plays a major role in how far that tank will take you. I've gotten as much as 225 out of a tank, and as low as 150. You won't know what your bike is capable of until you run it down til it sputters and then flip to reserve.

Sending unit is an easy fix. Rockriverpowersports.com or stadiumyamaha.com. under 60 bucks for the part and 30 minutes or so to chenge. I usually get 160-180 miles before I get the fuel light depending how bad I am abusing the bike.

My fuel gauge was messed up on my '01 when I bought it too. Took it out and tried a few things to fix it and ended up just buying a new one for 60 something bucks. Put it in and about a year later it started acting up again. Took it out, cleaned it, still not acting right. I have a general idea how far I can get, depending on my attitude, but I rely on the fact I can get at least 25-30 miles on the reserve tank, if I behave. I'm not planning on buying another gauge anytime soon....

Do you guy think that the SeaFoam or other additives that we put in our tanks has anything to do with the rapid failure of these gauges?

Did you check the green connector at the rear of the tank?

I was having same problem with fuel gauge, it would do the intial sweep then straight to empty. I ordered sender unit form partizilla $75 plus shipping. I installed it and still have e same problem. I'm thinking that it's the solid state board that all the electronics plus into... The price is ridiculous, like $600, so I guess I will keep riding with a brand new sender unit and an inoperable gauge. I will just switch to reserve when it runs out....

That's what happened to me too. Fuel gauge worked intermittently for a few months, then failed completely. Then speedometer started failing intermittently for a few months, then failed completely. Paid a shop to put in new fuel sending unit. Seemed like it was working for a day or so. Been running with no fuel gauge or speedometer or odometer for more than a year. I always run down to reserve.

================================

Sanes7,last time i checked the instrument cluster was closer to $750-800 then $600.

Update,just looked it up,its $728 list & $588 wholesale not inc shipping for the inst cluster so you were right on the money/LOL!!

Anyway,i have a spare instrument cluster & everything works fine (speedometer/fuel gauge/signal arrows,etc) accept for the clock that stopped working.

If you or anyone else here in RSC is interested i will let it go for the $150 i paid for it not inc shipping to your residence.

I also have a brand new in the box fuel sending unit,it lists for $105 & wholesales for $71 not inc shipping & i paid $81 for it inc shipping.

I'd let the fuel sender go for $50 not inc shipping to your residence.

PM me if interested in any of the parts.

Scott
