low gas mileage 9 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
I have a 2007 R* that I got in April 08,new.The fuel gauge has never worked right. The low fuel light comes on about 125 miles and 10 miles later it makes me go into reserve.I always have plenty of gas left and get 37-38 mpg no matter how I ride or where I ride. The other day the light came on at 86 miles and when I gassed up at 124 miles it needed 4.45 gal. WTF!!!!! That's 27 mpg. The bike runs fine, no smoke,no leaks ,no smell of gas, nothing. What would make me use so much gas??
Thanks, Ken:angry

I THINK YOU NEED TO SEE IF YOUR CHOKE IS WORKING CORRECTLY

You didn't mention how many miles you have on the bike now but I can tell you that my 07 when new was getting in the low-mid 30's. After about 1000 miles the mileage started going up and I'm now getting in the mid 40's. I've read of a number of other people getting better mileage as she breaks in. I don't remember hearing of anyone getting down in the 20's. It does sound like maybe there is something else going on. There is an article in the tech section on choke adjustments that might help with the mileage problem. Also if you have done any mods to the bike it would help to know what you have done. Some of the pros around here will have more ideas for you I'm sure.

First of all, the gas gauge on the roadie is known for screwing up and then quitting completely. 2nd, make sure your PMS screw isnt backing its way out like mine did. With that new of a bike though, you would of had to been into the carb already and removed the pms plug. So if you havent rejetted or messed with the carb, that wouldnt be it....a heads up for other guys though .

My bike has 1500 miles, stock except for Roadhouse slip-ons.I have not been into the carb and up until this last tank of gas there was no problem with the mileage.

Did you get gas somewhere new this tank? Have you checked your float level? It also might just be a fluke. See what the next couple tanks do.

Hmmm , sometimes different gas will give you different mileage, but thats pretty radical. I've used 1 station for awhile and then switched and lost 4-5 mpg, but not that much. You still have very low miles, weird how it dropped like that but it will still need some time to settle in. The carb gurus should be wakin' up soon, they should be able to give you some ideas. Like BIGBEN said...check your choke to make sure its seating right... check out the 'musky choke fix' in tech articles.

I notice that from tank to tank the mileage varies..
40.5 - 48 mpg..
all in what time of day I fill the tank and the pump that fills, sometimes I can get the pump to fill slow and get an extra 1/4 to 1/2 gallon of gas in and my mileage numbers are lower on paper..but the next tank will be more miles before reserve..
but I use my b trip and log gallons over several tanks and depending on regular ride to work, (all highway 75-85 mph) 44 mpg, and trips and rides with the group 46 mpg usually slower speeds and no feet down riding..

You don't have enough miles on your new bike to get a good reflection of the gas mileage.
Also .... are you sure you're determining your mileage correctly.

I realize that I don't have many miles on the bike yet but I'm pretty sure I know how to divide the miles by the number of gal I put into the tank.Again the mpg I have been getting is the same from the first tank up until now. Thanks for all of your input. I will keep riding and I hope is was a fluke. That would be nice. I like the bike and have been enjoying riding.
