Stock carb cleaning and rebuild 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Ok, I did a search and was surprised to NOT find any threads on cleaning and rebuilding the stock carb on a Roadstar.

I have one question. Is the bowl accelerator pump (the rod located in the bowl) supposed to move up and down (in and out if you prefer)

Thanks in advance and if I missed a good thread on this subject, by all means let me know where to look and read.

Denny

go to the tech articles and there is plenty to read about carbs. The answer to your question is yes it should move up/down. When you push it down it should return back up by itself.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. FYI I did try the tech articles and found mostly re-jetting stuff.

So just to be clear, I should be able to pull the rod from the bowl of my stock carb and find a spring in there?

Nice looking machine you have there BTW. What bags do you have on you bike??

Yep there is a spring in there. Thanks for the compliment on the bike. The bags are HD police bags.

I love the size of those bags.

Are they available commercially?

Also, should I be able to pull that rod out from the bowl?

It is stuck. I can put the bowl in an ultra sonic bath. Any thoughts on the best solvent?

I'm a chemist so I have all options.

Acetone
Hexane
Freon

???

How can I get the accelerator pump freed up???

You can find those bags on ebay all the time. Spray a little penetrant on it to see if you can work it up/down and get it loose. Your the chemist so use something that won't damage the carb body.I have no idea what those chemicals are that you mentioned.

Daard I've never tried it but I've heard boiling the carb parts in lemon juice does really well for cleaning. Again I've never tried it, have just heard it a good bit. Should be plenty of info on it if you google it.

hot lemon juice would be the same as hot citric acid

I may try this if I fail in other ways.

Thanks Dave and oneperfect
