Celina 2017, A RoadStar Clinic June 23, 24, 25 1 Year, 7 Months ago

As the planning for the 5th Annual event is underway, I am proposing an alternative to the tradition. Part of what makes this (and other) events popular is getting to learn new things and see what someone else did (first hand) to solve common issues or approach something in a creative way.
So, this year I suggest we focus on the CLINIC side of the meet. We always seem to conduct a great deal of carb adjustments (davej and Curt) as well as suspension modifications (smokescreens) and bracket fabrication to mount bags and fairings (DChopper). Having Mike and George from ED Seats demo their products and make stock available to "try before buy" was a welcomed event to the many who just wanted to know what all the fuss was over the great ED Seats.
Here's a picture from when the group tore my bike down in the parking lot of a hotel at our Iowa M&G.

I'd like to see more of this type action (and I think others would too).
So, share your ideas on what you think we can do. What would you like to learn more of? What would you like to see demonstrated? Got ideas?, share them.
Let's make the 5th anniversary event one that is a true learning event! What do you say?
Warden.

When I went to my first M&G I thought that is what it was going to be, a lot of learning or demonstrations being available.
The rain and carb day was good the year before last, but I'm sure some people wish they got a ride for the day in. As others have said, a lot of people get a good ride in just using Celina as the destination.
As for what to do for "clinics", two quick thoughts.
Electrical 101. Some electrical basics or specific points for our bikes.
Slow speed handling tips. Maybe some expert demonstrations of some friction zone work.
Thanks,
Mike

Just a thought - is there a "Ride Like a Pro" course or instructor in the Ohio area? Or something/someone like this that might be available for a session for the group?

I think that there should be a short demo on how to locate electrical shorts with an electric schematic and a volt meter. But that's just my opinion.

I wish I had paid more attention to diagnosing the stator and rectifier at Celina 15 myself. Anyone got a load tester for batteries and a bad battery so we could show how a charged battery can still be bad? I think we still have several who don't get that one.

To make it simpler for these people, and to use more common equipment, the demo could be putting a volt meter on the battery and then hitting the start button. A good meter will measure and hold the value that the battery drops to. Also easy to see on the old needle type meters.
Having 12 volts does not mean that you have enough current available, it only means you have 12 volts. The same reason our fully charged bike batteries won't start a diesel.
People not understanding voltage and current(measured in amps)seems to be common.
(Putting a bigger solenoid/relay in a starting circuit will not allow "more amps to go to the starter". A 20 amp switch does not let more current flow than a 10 amp switch. Too big a battery or jump start will "push too many amps". )

We need to fly Ypsilon in from Finland and get him to do a "how to install a turbo" clinic!
I volunteer my bike as the test subject!
In all seriousness...I'd be interested in seeing someone who knows what they're doing install fork emulators or do a valve check/adjustment.

Penquin I just had that very problem. The battery had 12.8v but not enough power to lights or anything else. Bought a new battery. My thought was that battery broke internally after hitting a bump.

At my age (69) I'd like a clinic on how to pick up young chicks. Ya know, them 50-60 year olds. Of course, they may think I'm too old.
