Belt Suggestion 2 Years, 11 Months ago
My belt broke.

It had a hole through it when I bought this bike some 4 and half years ago, so I knew this day would come.

My question: I had swapped in a 31 tooth pulley for the, what are they on the '01's, I forget, 32 or 33 tooth pulley? When I did so, it was necessary to turn the tension adjusters pretty much all the way in to take up the extra slack.

Do I buy a standard length belt? Can I buy a 1 tooth shorter belt, or is the protocol to step down to a 2 tooth shorter belt, when you go to the 31 tooth pulley?

I'm looking for those of you who know the answer to this... don't want to order something up, only to learn it ain't gonna work. KnowhatImean?

RSC guys are the very best!

Okay, mine's an '01 with a 31 tooth drive pulley. What's the standard? Is it 130 teeth for the wider early belts, and 131 teeth for the later narrower belt?

I think I'm to be shooting for a 128 tooth???

Seems I remember it's okay to run a later narrow belt on older R*'s, but not older wider belts on newer R*s. Also, if the later narrower belts have 1 more tooth than the older wider 130 tooth belts, and I'm running a 31 tooth drive pulley... I'm thinking I'd better not even give a thought to the 131.

Am I tracking straight???

'03 and below run a 130 tooth 1/2"belt and '04 and newer run a 130 tooth 1/8" belt. Look on ebay they have some deals. Look for Gates or Dayco Panther belts. They are the best two besides OEM. You don't even want to price an OEM belt

I very much appreciate that... but, should I be switching down to a 128, since I've been running a 31 tooth front pulley... or just stick with the standard 130, as they will run, if even there's little to no adjustment left?

Seems I also remember that the Dayco Panther was one really tough belt, and about the best replacement.

Time to shop....

yep, 128 tooth. and if ya have to use a used belt, it has to go back on in the same direction it came off, or expect it to snap.

Okay, I can find Dayco Panther... guaranteed lowest price at Direct Cycle Parts, but I have yet to hear back from anyone to whether I should go with a 128 tooth belt cause I'm running a 31 tooth front pulley on my '01!

Does anyone definitively know that answer???

DCP wants $125. nice price, but how many teeth... PLEEZ?

Ah, there we go!

Thanks, Erb... anyone know a better price to be paid $125 is good... I'll check the ship with that.

Can't complain... belt broke at 2:00. Got a new Dayco Panther 128 tooth ordered for $132.90, with shipping, by 4:10... thanks to the good folks right here on the Clinic!

Now, if we ever thaw up here in SE New England, I can roll it out, put it on the Harbor Freight yellow jack and enjoy a nice sunny day outside in some Spring breezes... hopefully by AUGUST!!!

Thanks again, Erb!

I just responded on your other post "poor fellow American" but are you sure it's a 128??? I thought the guys running a 65" rear pulley were running the 128 and stock R*'s had a 140 tooth!!!!
