electrical woes... 6 Years, 11 Months ago
i would like to know if i can isolate the safety switch loop in my system. engine dies only when i put in gear. clutch & sidestand switches are deleted...each tied together. i am at a loss. tried two relays no. 9 in the 1600 wiring diagram. starting system ok, just safety side of loop is dead.

check the kickstand sw wiring you did.
dying when taking the gear out of neutral (its a neutral safety sw)
says the kickstand is down, which leads me to first look at what you did there.

got volt meter (with ohm scale & good battery)? is that sw 1 wire or 2?

Is the neutral light on when in neutral?

the neutral light on the dash IS on when in neutral...goes out as i shift into gear...the engine also dies at this moment. the neutral switch (located in front of the transfercase)...has only one wire to wiring harness..so it must ground to frame to activate. i have not yet removed this switch..i'm thinking since it is functioning it must be good??
my goal now is to isolate (remove) the safety system...the safety wiring loop runs thru relays, switches and the ignitor. removing the loop causes problems in each location.

Happened to me just after installing the apes. Turns out the connector on the clutch lever was loose. Quick check will tell you if thats the issue. Hope it is, it is the easiest fix.

Safe riding

Been trying to help him as well. He has clutch switch wires connected together, so that is out of the pic, As well as the kickstand wires connected, another item out of the pic. bike starts, clutch pulled in, put in gear, then as soon as releasing clutch lever....dies. I thought carb, since it's now under load?? But not even sure, sometimes ya just need to be there to see exactly what is happening.

the only other thing would be the diode #10 service manual, ch 7 pg 18, if the diode is open, then connecting the wires at kick stand it would still be open, shutting down motor since it would look like the kick stand is down and going into gear. if you can short the kickstand wires ahead of the diode, that would take the diode out of the ckt as well.
