99 -07 Pie plate question 1 Year, 6 Months ago
I'm putting 07 cast wheels on my 99 R*

using 99 rotors and brakes. Do I use the 99 Pie Plates?

07 does not use them, but brakes are different on an 07, so I want to get it right.

07 with mag. You don,t need the pie plates. Some guys are running the 99 brakes without issues.

The pie plates were aesthetic on the one hand, and functional on the other. One has a weighted rubber block on it, the other does not. The purpose was to prevent harmonic resonance between the 2 identically sized and spaced rigid brake rotors. With the semi-floating disc design used with the rigid mount calipers from 04 on, harmonic resonance ceases to be an issue. I've had the plates off mine for 55K miles. They are heavy, and they are also un sprung weight, the worst kind. I DO occasionally experience harmonic resonance between the brake discs with light pressure on the brakes, and around 5 mph, but I don't really care. It's just a noise the machine makes, and so long as I understand the origin of the noise and it's effect on the machine (none) I'm just keeping on moving.

Use 1100 hub covers in place of the pie pans.

thanks all for the info!

My main concern was NEED. If I need them in this scenario, then I'll put them on. I would prefer to leave them off for aesthetics. IMHO they become the focus of the front wheel when they are there. I like the look of the black center, I think it shows the cast spoke better.
