170 main performance update 3 Years, 4 Months ago
|
|
So, after pulling my plugs a couple of weeks back and finding them slightly ashen, but not too bad, I decided to up my main from the 167.5 to the 170. I kept everything else the same. 37.5 pilot, 4th groove on the DJ needle, PMS screw, everything.
Done 250 miles on Saturday and played around with it some, but mostly running it in on a typical day ride and checking mileage. Mileage was right in line with the 167.5. Today after work I ran over to Midlothian to the ACE to pick up some hardware and took the long way back home to stretch it out to the limiter a few times and get a good solo butt dyno check in. The 170 pulls an appreciable amount harder up top than the 167.5, but I may drop the needle a half step for the 1/3 to 2/3 throttle roll-on. Thought it should be a little crisper in that range.
That's all for now.

3rd slot two silver washers was what did it for me on my 05. Gram and Doc put me onto that in my very early carb years and it served me well even sense.

HSR45 pilot jet 17.5 needle 97 on 1st groove from the top (this is not my daily setup) main 175 - 120 mph with easy but no more even 1 mph (50F air temp)
pilot jet 22.5 with 175 main - 125 mph, now I have 180 & 22.5 pilot but no time to check v-max, too cold.
I see that lot of people chasing bigger main raising needle.

JD, Did you pull a plug to see what it looked like compared to using the smaller main?

Not yet. It was enough of a change to slip my clutch this morning though. Oh well. I can do that when I change my front brake pads I guess. I'll pull a plug or two soon and have a look. Doesn't "feel" too rich, but I'll see what wonders the plug may reveal.
