Baffle-ing V&H;'s Long Shots... 5 Years, 8 Months ago
When I had my HD some years back, and swapped the stock mufflers for some Screamin Eagle Slash Cuts, the original sound was a tad to harsh for me. I picked up some fiberglass cloth, and wrapped the baffle, and it was a great compromise.

In the interest of tinkering, and or searching for just the right sound, has anyone ever wrapped the baffles on a set of these? I really like the look, but if I could take the edge off of them just a bit, I think I'd like the slightly mellower tone. When riding "Drifters" bike with the stock exhaust last week, I got to thinking that there might be a suitable compromise in there somewhere.

I don't think there's enough room to wrap the baffles? I remember when i was messing around with them that it was a pretty tight fit. I think i remember seeing a tech article on a different approach tho...

Yea this is it http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/162/105/

It's raining here today, and I should probably just slide them out and have look, but I'm really comfortable right now with a cup of coffee, a toffee biscotti and a keyboard .
The clearance was what I was thinking about. I think I could pick up some glass cloth at West Marine. If I had even 1/4 inch of clearance I think it might work.
I know its pretty close, because I think the baffle is what is causing the buzzy sound that one member described as "marbles in a bucket" awhile back.
I just hate it when I'm, happy and carefree, and then somebody post some thing up, and then it starts to wear on me.

I know for a fact there's not 1/4" clearance. The baffles are damn near a press fit lol at least mine were. Mine used to sound like a jake brake on decel, but i was only running torque cones in front and no baffles lol they are loud, even with baffles, I sometimes miss all the noise, but I love the duals even more, and i love the torque the my RH doolies make, but I've been thinking about a way to put just a bit more edge on my doolies lol

I agree, the sound is a bit too marbly. There's gotta be a way to tune these pipes.
Maybe I'll just have to break down and get something else. It would be a toss up between the Freedom True Duals and a 2-into-1.

I heard Paul's bike, he went back to a stock exhaust, didn't sound bad at all; just would hate putting all that weight back on the bike.

Anytime, I read on a different thread where someone had used some sink hair strainers in front of a baffle to add just a hair of backpressure and changed the tone. may be just enough but that was a different pipe to so not sure how that would affect the ls's

I'm sticking with the LongShots. I'm seeing some baffles made by V&H's for them, that some have bought and modified(ie drilled some extra holes to tune for their pleasure)on the WWW. I wanna see what shows up with this thread, before I leap to a decision.

SkPeg -- yall about to float away on your side of the bay?

These are the Vance and Hines brand quiet baffles I used when I had longshots on my Roadie.

http://www.phatperformanceparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=21869&Show=Reviews

They tamed the volume down although the loud bark was still there if you grab a big hand full of throttle. Also gave me a boost in low end power. Took about five minutes to remove the stock V&H baffles and install the replacements.

As you know I wanted the most quiet exhaust I could find and went back to the stock exhaust system.

The heavy stuff just started a few minutes ago. Its been raining off and on since last night, but not the toad strangler variety like this.

I noticed the low end torque you had with your stockers, compared to my V&H's when I rode it. A reduction in the volume a bit is what I was looking for, but a little pick me up on the lower end would be great.
I'd like few more rpm's in gear before the shift, and I was doing it early to keep the noise down so as not to disturb the natives.
Thanks a bunch for the link. If you had mentioned the baffles, I had plumb forgot. I remember you sold the pipes awhile back.

Have you had a chance mount your new fat shield yet?
