remove rear wheel from top or bottom?? 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
|
|
Just curious,
When I have needed to remove the rear tire on any bike (including road stars) I have always lifted the bike up and removed the wheel from below the fender.
I helped a buddy remove and install his rear tire this week (the guy I sold Misfit to) and tried it a different way.
This time I put the bike on a jack but only raised it enough to lift the tire off of the ground. I then took out he 3 bolts holding on the rear fender, and removed it. This allowed me to remove the wheel through the top.
This seemed like it was a easier way to change the wheel.
It just got me wondering how many of you Road star owners change your wheel by removing it through the bottom or the top?

Texasscott has mentioned before, that when they pull the rear wheels in the Yamaha shop he works at, they remove the fender, and pull it straight up. That's how I did it on my Springer when I was working on it also. Of course the rear fender was already off.

I've done it both ways
When I took the wheel off my first time, I pulled it from the bottom. At that time I didn't realize how easy it was to pull the rear fender. Once I figured that out, it was a no brainer. Much easier from the top.

I remove the fender with the saddlebags and brackets all in one. I had a pic but that was from the photo bucket era. I check he swingarm and do a visual on all the parts that are usually covered.

Same here. From the top. But I don't remover the fender. I remove the two bolts under the seat and the bag mount bolts on the side, loosen the horn bolt a bit, and swing the whole thing up (saddle bags and all) and use a strap to tie it to the handlebars. I don't have to disconnect wires or anything and it gave me plenty of room to work.

+1, Yamaha did a good job on making the fender easy to remove...
3 bolts and one connector makes removing the fender to remove real wheel dang easy.

Have always pulled the fender to remove the tire. But plan on trying swinging it up as Tykes does, I also have DChopper brackets and HD Street Glide bags.
