A few final stator questions, I promise. 4 Years ago
When I took the generator cover off there was no washer on the bottom bolt. Im looking at the cover where the bolt was removed from and I see what could be the washer stuck inside the hole. Is that the washer or is that part of the cover and the new washer is supposed to sit against that? I will attempt to attach a picture.

Next question, is there a way to condition the bolts for the exhaust? Mine are all rusted and felt brittle as I removed them earlier.

Still need an answer if anyone knows about the cover and if that is the old washer stuck inside.

mine was a copper washer (gasket) that was under the bolt head. The washer (gasket) should just pop off. It's copper colored if I remember correctly. It shouldn't be stuck to anything. I bought a new one and replaced when I did my stator.
it appears your cover is black. maybe somebody painted the washer to your cover

Thought they were all black. I dont think the PO painted it.

Thanks for the info.

Now I have other problems, my Harbor Frieght torque wrench must me off because Mongo just snapped the long bolt with the washer off.

Picture is difficult to see ... My cover isn't black either.

When I am doing routine maintenance and find bolts that aren't in the best of shape, I stop what I'm doing and take a ride down to the Nuts & Bolts shop and get replacements. Sometimes I buy a double set so that I have a spare.

Last time I was messing with anything that required the exhaust bolts to come off, I cleaned them up real well and used some Vaseline on them. They looked better and even felt a bit better, but I still went and got some replacement bolts in the event they go south.
