Find out if the transmission recall was done.

I bought an 01 Roadiee last year that required the transmission recall maint. My local Yamaha shop did the service and went over the bike completely, including new fluids as part of the the recall maint. Nice way to get peace of mind with a used bike.

Make sure the rear shock preload adjuster nuts are not backed all the way off.

Get a new battery if it does not already have one, so you know where you stand with it.

Check the steering head bearings and make sure they are properly tightened.

Lubricate the cables thoroughly. Do all the pivot points for the levers, shifter, and brakes as well.

Pretty much do a 6000 Mile service on the thing to get familiar with it and get eyes on as many things as possible.

All the above is reccomended as well.

form NC . If you change the transfer case oil sometimes you have to give that big chrome plug a pretty good tap to break it free .

Not so old... You might want to check that the drive pulley nut is tight with the lock washer bent tight to it. Been quite a few on here with it loosening up. Welcome from NC

Problem: Can't get on forward drain plug worth a damn.

Solution:

Works every time. A top quality wrench like this Snap-On has a thin enough wall on the boxed end to go right on, even with the tight space around the recess of the plug, and you can wail on it with a hammer to bust that bitch loose, and not worry about hurting the wrench.
