Second time was the charm for me... rode yesterday, parked it hot in the garage. Just went out this morning, and not a drop to be found on the floor... and a running of my fingers along the bottom and back edge of the cover area didn't have the slightest oiliness to it! I'm feeling good about having gotten that straightened out!

Had a drip this morning still after cleaning up real good the night before. I have time tomorrow so I will take the cover off and put a little silicone on both sides of the gasket and reinstall. Not so scary the second time. I was a little intimidated the first time having never worked on a bike before. But it shifts normal and the clutch felt good on my short road test. Just have to easy out and replace my oil drain plug in the motor and reseal the clutch housing. I want to save the fresh oil (amsoil) I just put in there, do I drain both plugs before removing clutch housing?

No, drain engine only... and, you won't save your new gasket, so use gasket making RTV Black silicone, and follow the directions. Works great.

I drained both plugs, and also was able to save and reuse the new gasket. I put a thin layer of sealant on both sides of the gasket and reinstalled, rode for and hour and parked for 2hrs. No drips. Rode all afternoon and evening almost 1000k. We will see if there is a drip tomorrow morning.
The drain plug came out real easy with a ground down Canadian tire extractor socket for 17mm and a 1" wrench. I wasn't able to do this the first time around only because I didn't have my bike jack.

Sat overnight, not a drip. Heading out for the day on it now. One question. It seems that the clutch free play increases as the bike gets hot. Adjusted cold I have my nickel gap, clutch works flawless. I am assuming this is normal? After 3 or four hours I have about 3 nickels gap and still functions normal... thx

I don't know if it is still available, but there is / was this stuff you could get from the Yamaha dealer called Yamabond. I used it to seal up the cases on my 1958 Sportster (blasphemy!), which were pretty rough, and it sealed that bitch up completely. May have been the only 1958 Sportster in existence that didn't leak.

Dave, make sure your middle cable adjuster is tight... if it isn't, it will let the cable get 'shorter' and create slack. It's easy to tighten the holding nut against the wrong surface, and not actually lock that middle adjuster in place. Check it out.

Thx fellas, adjusters in cable are all tight. Free play perfect when cold and triples when hot and clutch always works great, no dragging, no slipping. I think it's fine. I used the grey silicone for use with engine oil. It never really hardens, still gooey and stickey when we take timing covers off 10 years later.
