Why did you change from one synthetic to another? 8 Years, 7 Months ago
One of those questions you're almost afraid to ask since oil's a worn out topic here (no pun intended).
I've read many old and newer threads on why synthetic vs dino (esp Yami)...and quite a few auto vs m/c. All I can find about 1 m/c synthetic vs another is summed up as "see which one your bike likes". My wallet likes Mobil 1 V-Twin, yet others here swear by Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. Has anyone (or their Roadie) been happier with what one member termed as one of these gourmet oils after trying another?

I was using Sperto Gold, worked well bit switched to Amsoil and the RS loves it. Little less top end noise also. And I can go further between changes. The only other oil I have considered is the same one I use in my race car Lubrication Engineers ....but dont know yet if it is wet clutch safe.

Oil is like beer everyone has their favorite...

I used the Mobil 1 15w-50 in the 5 qt jug for probably 27 years, but I switched just this year to the Shell Rotella T 5w-40 Synthetic in the 4 qt jug for really just a few simple reasons. First, it's pre-measured in a 4 qt jug, instead of a 5 (less chance of a mess). Second, it's only $19 at Wally*World. And third, I determined that the additive package for a diesel engine is likely to be more compatible to the needs of motorcylce engine than an auto oil.

I'll throw in one other reason... I called Mobil about its use in a bike, and they said absoltuely not, though I've used it in bikes for a couple of decades, but on the Shell Answerman site, I read that the Rotella was bike compatible, even though it did not say so on the container.

So, there you have it. That's my story... and I'm stickin' to it! (And oil's not like beer... I couldn't stand the taste of any of the oils I've tried! )

It's an aquired taste, but will defininately keep you 'regular' and give your hair (if you have any) a healthy sheen.

Last change I ran Mobil 1 v twin 20w/50 and a K&N 303 +/- $57.00. This past weekend changed to
Rotella T syn 5w/40 and a ST 7317 +/- $22.00. Not sure I am happy with the new oil and filter setup. The engine seems to be running way hotter and this sounds nuts but I think I developed another neutral between second and third gear. I may dump it in a month and go back to the way I had it before. So much for trying to save $.

Switched and going back!
The Amsoil dealer's 2 cents. While running my 8th thousand's mile on amsoil I ran into a severe N.O. traffic jam, heat in the 90's stop and hardly go traffic long time engine was very very hot.

So, I got oil anxiety and changed it mid trip and used Mobile one V twin and a Mobile one filter. Right away I was like crap I should have let the old Amsoil in. Even Scahtzie who is not so mechanically inclined could hear the difference, and we heard it all the way home and I am still hearing it.

Even as a dealer, I hate the Price of Amsoil, but for the $12 extra per change and seeing how I can get an extra 4K miles out of each change. It costs less and less noise.

So, I'll be switching back to Amsoil. Had Mobile one v twin been as quiet as Amsoil I'd had no problem using it.

The noise I am taking about it when it's all warmed up and running for more than a half an hour. Especially on the highway.

I changed from dino to synthetic on my last oil change. I found Amsoil for 9 dollars and some change a quart, and I went with that. Also went with the Amsoil Severe Gear in my transfer case at the same time. I have not tried any other synthetics, but the way my bike is running and shifting with the Amsoil, along with the price I am getting it for, I will have no reason to try another. Based on the White Pages Study of oils, Amsoil is the best for me. BTW, Amsoil has the second edition oil study posted on their web site. Unlike the first, Amsoil does not come in first place in every category, but it comes in first overall. Also, they included different oils in the test that were not in the first.

Check It Out

I've been using Rotella 5w-40 synthetic in my Roadie & my Concours for years & no problems! I was using Castrol GTX 10W-40 in my Connie & switched to the Rotella & it looked much, much better & less thinned-out at changes. I also like the price, the fact that it doesn't contain friction modifiers like automotive oils & the availability. If I need oil on a trip, I don't have to find a motorcycle dealer, just a local truckstop or Wal-Mart.
