Rear tire question 9 Years, 2 Months ago
Anyone know how wide of a rear tire can fit on the stock rim?

My understanding is on a stock rim anything above a 160 pulls in the sides and you have to start grinding on a 180..do a search for "tire size"...plenty of info....Coug

a 160 fits fine and looks good..Just did mine ..Metzler recomendes a 160 for xtra wieght or lots of 2 up riding..Past that the rim is not wide enough. You can go to a 180 before grinding..btu you need a wider rim. When I put the 160 metzler on I was surprised at how much larger it was.

You go with a wider tire you have less rubber on the road as the rim pinches it in more than the regular 150.

I went with the 160 Metz and love it. I think I have just as much rubber on the road as I did before with the 150. I didn't measure it, but it sure looks it.

I, too, have to get a new rear tire before the season starts (grrrrrr snow, cold, ice). I think I'm going to either Metzler or Continental vs. the Dunlop. I ride a lot of 2 up & the Dunlop seemed to wear a little wide. I checked the pressure often & always put 41# in the rear. Will the Metz or Conti wear any better?
