Is there a issue with the 2006 oil pump gear?
If so, will the cases need to be split?

What he said^^^^

Somewhere mid year on the 01's is where the change takes over(or was supposed to), according to the bulletin.

Look at it this way if you take it apart and it has been changed to the new style you will have some peace of mind knowing for the price of a gasket and a little time Vs not knowing and the possibility that it hasn't been changed and it may break at any moment. If it has the newer gear in it sell the one you purchased to a member. There are plenty here that need it.

I can think of somebody, who needs one, and possibly two of them.

I'm in the process of doing my Oil Pump Gear on my 01... Contacted Yamaha and with the vin they couldn't confirm build date, since I was planning on changing to the Barnett Spring Conversion this spring, I figured I'd keep digging past the clutch basket to the gear... There's plenty of info on here and youtube, the best info is right here with a step by step instructions... doing ourselves will give us piece of mind that it's done, and done right.... save all receipts just in case Yamaha acknowledges the defect, but I'm not going to hold out for that. and bye the way with the 06..... you're good to go

That's what I'm doing so I figured I'd change the gear while I had it apart.

No issues with the 06, don't need to split the case in any year to get to the pump gear.
If you're working more than drinking it's not more than about a 2 beer job.
