Is the stock slide needle adjustable?

It can be adjusted slightly by adding or removing washers under the spacer but there aren't any adjustment groves like on the ones overseas.

The stock carb I had came with a needle that I cannot identify.
The clip was on the 5th or bottom groove.
I raised the clip to the 4th groove because the 5th groove just seemed too extreme to me.

No AIS.

I have Cobra baloney slash cut exhausts and a K&N pancake clamp on air filter.

The mixture screw plug had not been drilled so i drilled that out and put in a adjustable thumbscrew type mixture screw.

The stock main jet listed was a 185. This carb had a 187.5 which did not seem extreme.
I left it in.

It will start and idle and after a several minute warm up seems ok, but will stumble with a quick turn of the throttle. Mixture screw at about 2-3/4 turns out. Seems about right. No popping on decell.

The idle jet is a 37.5 and I am going to change to a #40 to get rid of that lean stumble.

Any advice?

If you are using Mikuni jets bring the main jet size down to a 175-180 when you go to the #40 pilot jet. Leave the clip in the 4th groove 2 - 2 1/2 on the PMS and you should be good

The 1700's main jet is a 182.5 not a 185. I think if you look closely (with a magnifying glass)yes I need one, you will see what you think is a 187.5 is actually a 182.5. Withe the pies you have if they have baffles a 172.5 main or 170 with the air filter you are running should do just fine. Set the PMS at 2 turns and ride the bike till warm then adjust the PMS for the best idle after you have set the hot idle speed at 900 RPM. BTW the stock needle has only one grove and with the one you have I would bet it is a Barons or a SpeedStar so put the clip on the 4th grove. Check the picture for the needle stack up.

Thanks, I will get out my magnifier and check that out Curt.

Does that parts stack up have one washer added to raise the needle? Or is that the stock stack up?
