Check out the Erbman mod that is IMO the best way to do it. If you turn the hose around end for end the curve of the hose will bring it right up to a perfect spot under the tank. Then use a chevy breather element from any old chevy 350 model veh. I think I used one from a 1975 chevy pick up.

There is no need to put a filter on the crankcase vent.

It will just get oily after a period, and could get clogged causing problems with
crankcase pressure trying to vent out around the engine seals.

What about bugs crawling up the tube and getting stuck?

If you are worried about something going up the crankcase vent tube you can add a one way flap valve.
Many motorcycles use them.

It is called a one way "duckbill" check valve.
You can see them here.:

Halfway down the page.

I bought a small multi purpose filter from O'rielly, cost $10 bucks, ran it down below.I remove it once a year and clean it with the K&N cleaner and reinstall...works great, doesn't have time to get plugged up.
