Help - Odd Pilot Jet, Air under Vacuum Slide Cover 5 Years, 8 Months ago
I've been experiencing ongoing challenges with dialing in my carb. A while back I found out that the Hypercharger that came with the bike, also calls for changing the stock PILOT JET, AIR [#2 in the diagram below] under then Vacuum Slide cover, beneath the diaphragm. [Not to be confused with the Pilot Air Jet at the base of the carb throat #39 below.]

Kuryakyn refers to the jet as a, "Pilot Air Bleed" and their kit includes a 1.5 [vs the stock 2.0]
But when I removed the diaphragm to install the stock jet, I found what looks like a brass ball or plug. [see below] What's that all about??? Am I looking at the wrong thing? I don't see where else I could put the stock Jet. Any ideas what's going on? Do I have to remove that and if so, how?

Here's a close up:

Looking at the top of the carb the jet is at about the 10:00 position. It is a very small jet and is just above the big L shaped elbow with the black plastic piece on it.

Lance im like 99% sure the only reason to change that jet is to change the amount of vacumb for the butterflies on the hypercharger to flutter more.

Wrong the butterflies get the vacuum from the tube on top of the manifold.

Curt, is this what your referring to? See yellow circle in image below:

Jason, there is no actual mechanical linkage to the slide valve, which acts like a butterfly valve on most carbs. So I would think that since it's a vacuum actuated diaphragm, the amount of bleed would effect the responsiveness of the valve. ...But I could be entirely wrong.

I no longer have the butterfly valves on the front of my HC and I've capped off all non-essential vacuum lines. I've essentially deactivated my Hypercharger so it's nothing more than an over-glorified K&N housing, [which is what the HC is anyway.] So that's why I'm going back to the stock setup.

Figured it out, that was it. Thanks again Curt! ...Now it's time to take it for a ride and see what happens. BTW it was a 1.5 in there and now I've got a 2.0. Hope it helps with throttle response. Fingers crossed.

Smart move Doc and you right about it being a glorified K&N housing because it really does nothing in the way of ram air. Smoke I am not really sure of the jets function it is an air bleed so I am sure it is used to control something.

The secondary pilot air jet doesn't change the vacuum the engine produces unless the size is changed enough to make the engine run unevenly.

The secondary pilot air jet and the primary pilot air jet in the mouth of the carb provide air to the pilot fuel circuit. With the same size pilot jet changing the air jet sizes will make the pilot circuit richer or leaner. Air through the primary pilot air jet is cut off by the coasting enricher valve in an effort to prevent lean misfire popping during deceleration.

Those round balls you see in several places on many carbs
just seal off holes that were used when matching the passage ways in the carb.

Do not remove them.
Also do not leave a carb in carb cleaner overnight or the glue that holds in those passage way
plugs (balls) will come unglued and then you will have an air leak.

Many Holly 5210 carbs on Chevy Vega's are ruined when that happened to them and many mechanics could not find out why the car would not idle unless the owner of the car told the mechanic what they had done to the carb.
Like.... leave it over night in carb cleaner!

Putting a pencil eraser over the hole is how I found out.
The car immediately began to idle properly.
