Buying a bike without seeing & riding it is really quite foolish. I've lived in Alaska and have known guys to do that, shipping crated bikes up from the lower 48 without anyone they know having checked it out first. It's always a crap shoot! You may get lucky or you may get ripped off.

I would never consider buying a bike without checking it out first or at the minimum, having someone I trust check it out.

well I own both, IF I were to buy unseen, which I have plenty around to look at and I'm assuming based on your location you dont,no the liner is my choice. I say this because 9 outa 10 times thats what I climb onto whithout even thinking.Every now and then I still ride the R it is a blast and has that muscle car feel. For me it's like choosing between a vette vs. camaro, just my opinion, choose but choose wisely

I have to agree with everyone that says "don't buy without looking at it in person. that being said I would lean toward the strat. I love my R*, but would also love to own a strat.......they are just sweet.

Alright boys, my buddy in Richmond is on the job. He rides a Triumph Rocket III, but I try not to hold that against him. He'll go by and test ride the R*.

When I sold my last R*, I knew what I wanted in the next one for me to get a leg up on my bagger plans... and this one seems to have it. Fuel injected with a fuel commander, dual exhaust, passing lamps, etc. No progress on the shipping front though. Uship seems to be the main option, and after 3 days I have 0 quotes from my auction on their site.

Regarding the Stratoliner... I'd love to be the one who figures out how to incorporate the roadwing shock. I'm hoping the seller will come down from his lofty perch. ($10k is out of the question)

Thanks for your input y'all.

That's awesome you have a buddy checking out the Roadie for you, it's a badass looking ride! The Strat is a whole other animal, I have rode a Deluxe more then a few times, and if I could afford it I would own it. That 113" motor is very special.

I would , and never do, buy used unless I know the owner, his riding style, his maint. schedule etc. Just too easy to get burned.

i'd go with the strat. i've bought a couple bikes off ebay, my 01 star for $2500 being one of them. you have to be getting a good deal to risk buying one sight unseen. sometimes you can tell alot from a description. If someone is going into detial, they generaly have had the bike for a while and know about it. some people leave a real breif description and alot of times they are the one that are flipping a bike and don't really know anything about it. watch for the ones that say something that gives them a way out later if there is problems like, needs new plugs, think it needs a tune-up, or havent started in a year.
I like the strat because it is close enough to look at (depending on when you are moving there) and it has a fairing. if you are already living in an area with a limited riding season I would want a bike that was set up so that I could take adventage of as much of that riding season as possible. Not that you couldn't add a fairing to the star.
Personaly I think both are priced a little high, but I live where I can get bikes pretty easy. I imagine that in alaska that it is not so loaded up with used bikes for sale making the prices a little higher.
Whatever you decide, it will be nice for you to be back in the wind.
If I lived in up there I think i would be looking at goldwings. To me they are not the prettiest but they have great wind protection and heat vents. a lady I work with rides one (i never have) and it can be the low 40's high 30's and she is still only wearing jeans on her legs. Yes I know this is a star site, but if it gave me another 2 month riding season....well

I've bought vehicles and boats sight unseen, you just have to ask lots of questions. Ask for video of it cranking, running, get someone to ride if you can though. That said, I like the looks of that Star and it's fuel injected, but I love the Strat too! I'd have to go Strat for the 113!

I think I'm the only one who doesn't really like the Strat. I just think the R* is a better looking bike. Price with shipping on the R* is not bad but unless I could have someone that I trust inspect the bike first, I would not buy it.

I dont care for the Strat at all!

I wouldnt buy a bike without being able to at least see and hear it in person. There are R*'s available all over the place. Once you move you should be able to find one at a reasonable drive.
