Adding a 12v outlet.... 9 Years, 10 Months ago
I'm going to put the GPS in the clear map part of my tank bag but need power. For those of you who have installed the cigarette type outlet on the bike, what power wire do you tap into? Is there one that's preferred over the others?

Thanks!!

M7

I would run it straight off the battery with an inline fuse.

What Musky said, that way if anything goes wrong it won't shut down the bike. Plus no cutting and splicing of the stock wires.

I would just add this. If you straight wire it to the battery, you'll have to remember to turn it off when stopped. My coworker forgot twice now and de-juiced the battery.

I installed mine right to the battery too... I added a 20Amp micro fuse holder and ran 12Ga stranded to the outlet...
I used an Advanced Auto "off the shelf" convieniance outlet...NOT a "cigarette lighter" adapter... it was $3.95 p.t. and pre-wired with spade connectors... Total cost... about $8.00 (and about an hours labor) Compared to Yami convienience outlet at $90...

"Convenience outlet"

Now I've heard of everything.
I wonder if cigarette lighters also help contribute to terrorism ....

Good idea and inexpensive too.

Here's a thought. If the outlet is wired directly to the battery couldn't you then modify a trickle or float charger to plug into it? Maybe just swap the pos and neg clamps for a male 12v "convenience" plug. That way you could just plug in and keep the battery topped off without taking the seat off. Ignition turned off of course.

Then again maybe there would be too much amperage from a trickle charger to run through a cigarette lighter type outlet and plug? Maybe it would fry something else.

Anyone know for sure?

That should work fine JSO. A trickle charger by definition puts out one amp or less, which any convenience outlet should handle.
