Helmet speakers 6 Years, 3 Months ago
|
|
Since it has gotten a bit cooler up here I have zipped my ear flaps back into my scorpion EXO 100 helmet. I just remembered that they have pockets inside of them to place speakers to connect to an ipod or whatever you like. I won't ride with ear buds in my ears, i like to have some hearing of what is going on around me. I thought maybe I would try some of the speakers that slide into these pockets in my helmet.
Can anyone recommend a set of speakers? I haven't ridden with music before and now that I tend to ride alone... Too cold for everyone else, I figured maybe some music would be nice.

I would really take a second look at ear buds.
The wind noise from wearing a shorty helmet means that you'll probably have to crank up the volume on the iPod to a point where you're not going to hear much around you anyway. Put the two noises together and you'll be deaf before you know it.
Most folks I know either wear ear plugs when they ride or they wear full coverage helmets to cut down on the wind noise. If I ride without my windshield and wear my half helmet the white noise from the wind rushing by almost kills me. Even with the windshield it's pretty loud too.
I ride with noise isolation headphones that fit in my ear and they dampen the wind noise enough to let me keep the volume low on my iPod AND be able to hear the sounds of traffic around me. They have sized silicone cups on the end to fit my ear so I can wear them for hours and not feel uncomfortable.
Just a thought.

I wear ear plugs (safety type) inside my full face. I think the wind noise is bad in a full face helmet too.
Then I have the intercom speakers for sound. 'course fidelity is not real great.

I use Motorola HT820 over the ear headphones. My phone is my GPS and music player and these headphones are bluetooth. It plays the music and when I set the GPS it will pause the music, give instructions then go back to where the music stopped. The phone part is turned off I don't want the wife, kids, work calling while I am enjoying a ride. Although once my dog was at the vet and I was expecting his call, I would have loved to see the look on his face when he called and with one touch to me headphone I answered the call, he asked what I was doing and I said "On my bike to Panama City". I can hear pretty good what going on around me and they fit my half helmet really well, they go behind my head. Another plus is that on the 3 days a year it drops below 50 they keep my ears warm.

I agree without the ear flaps, my helmet is somewhat loud with wind noise. When I have reinstalled the ear flaps, it just seems earily quiet comparatively speaking. Which is why I was thinking of a little background music.
Don't get me wrong, it is not totally quiet. Just thinking of trying to add a little music to the background noise. I would rather have no music than ear buds where I lose contact with road noise and what is happening around me.

I have the Exo Scorpion helmet also. I tried the headsets that I had removed from my helmet that I used on the Venture with the unicom and stereo. High quality and expensive head sets..... Not so good in the flaps on the half helmet. You have to crank the volume up high to hear and mine is plugged into my fairing mounted stereo!!! I bought some noise canceling earbuds from Staples, and one set for the wife from RAdio Shack. They are the same but Staples were $5 cheaper. Don't worry you can still hear what is going on..... Ear buds is the only way to go.....I have been riding with headsets for years with out a problem....I believe you can hear better with them in your ears than with the wind howling in them!!!!
