Persnally I would never close up an engine and run it if I knew contaminates had been intrduced into the oil. Saving a few bucks on oil isn't worth the risk of something getting blocked or clogged or being circulated through the intrnals of the engine. Its just a risk I wouldn't take if I didn't have to.

How would you suggest flushing the contaminants from the engine? And for the record, the contaminants I'm speaking of are soft gasket material, not much more than compressed paper, about the size of a pepper flake. Not metal shavings or dirt.

Great video!! That sure clears up a lot. Thanks man. That should be put in the Tech section.

normally if i have to scrape old gasket from the crankcases, i put wads of shop tissue (the type on a big roll) inside the case and over the guts.

when you remove the paper it brushes all the crap out at the same time.

Doc-V Those little pieces might not make it past the oil pump pickup screen where they'll stay until they deteriorate enough to pass through then on to the tank where there's another screen. Don't be surprised if you see some of them drain out with the tank oil. After the tank the oil goes straight to the filter with a small unfiltered bleedoff to the transmission.

If the transmission gears get ahold of any of it they'll crush it up pretty fine.

As long as the pieces were as small as you say I don't think you'll have a problem.

When I installed the Barnett plate I timed it so that when I wanted to crack open the side that I did an oil change at the same time. So when I put it all back together I'd have fresh oil in the bike along with the new parts.

Well, I didn't do the best job on getting the old gasket material off and had a small leak. Rather than drain and throw out $50 worth of Mobil V-Twin full syn. I used a clean trash back to line a new $2 catch pan from WalMart and drained both holes into the bag. Once it was all out I pulled the bag shut with the pull string and set it aside.

When I put it all back together I reused the oil I'd just drained. All was well and still is! Why anyone would throw away oil just because it's been drained is beyond me.
