HD muffler question 5 Years, 7 Months ago
|
|
Got my Bassani true dual head pipes mounted. I want to use HD touring mufflers for now but I don't know which ones to get. I know to stay away from the ones with the cats in them, but don't know which ones to use.
Can some one give me a part number for the right mufflers to use?
Which year and models mufflers to look for?
Which years have the cats?
Do both mufflers have the cats? If not which side has it?
Thanks for any help!
Chad

2010 and up the cats are in the head pipes, 2009 and earlier only California bikes had cats and I'm not sure if they were in the muffers or head pipes.

If you are running true duals, make sure both left and right mufflers have the same baffling. On my 09 (no cats), the right muffler is fully baffled and left muffler was more of a resonator. Those won't work on TD setups.

I believe none of the mufflers had actual catalytic in them, just the head pipe. The 2006 mufflers what comes to mind for maybe having the cats. What you want is the muffler ending in 99. This series muffler is identical on left and right side. the 07 and later the mufflers are quite different inside.
Why do you want to go with a restrictive muffler like this for your bike?

Thanks, that helps
Just looking for something cheap right now. Also, I want something a little quieter than what I have now. The loud pipes sound great but they get a little annoying on long rides.

Not to correct anybody but the 99-2008 harley baggers do not have a cat anywhere. So my suggestion if your looking for mufflers off a harley and if you check ebay there's alot. Just look for 99-2008 FLH,FLHX,FLHTCU or in other words any electra glide standard, electra glide classic, ultra classic, road glide, street glide. You can even use the mufflers off the roadkings in the same years mentioned.

Ok then, do I need to get 2 left or 2 right mufflers with the same part numbers so that the baffles will be the same?

That would require buying 2 sets of mufflers. Just buy a set off the bikes I mentioned and mount them up. Then with the bike running check to see if your getting about the same amount of air coming out each muffler. If you feel one is producing more air switch it to the other side of the bike and check again. If it still produces more air no matter which side it's on then you can open up the muffler that's not allowing as much air by drilling it out.
Chances are you won't even feel a difference.
