Carb has me stumped!! 2 Years, 8 Months ago
Need some extra brain power to solve a problem I have been working on for over a week.

My bike was running good, now all of a sudden I have a fuel starvation problem. It looks like several issues may have developed at the same time and I think I may eliminated most of them .... bad gas, plugged rollover valve.

I have torn down the carb 3 times and cleaned all the passages. I have also replaced the carb with a spare one and the fuel starvation issues did not improve.

Bike is 05 with new clean plugs. Fuel pump gone and using the 3 mm float needle valve. Running 1/4 line with clear view fuel filter midway between petcock and carb. Carb has 170 main, clip on 4th of Baron's needle, 37.5 pilot, Baron's PMS screw turned out 2 turns. Float level about 1 mm above flange surface using Odo's method or about 5 mm above using Yamma method. Brand new BAK.

I've had a hard time getting the bike started and running. If it did run it would go anywhere from 4 houses away to 15 min away. Interestingly when drained the float bowl a few times today I found small 2-3 mm bits of what look like, rubber or plastic in the bottom of the tin can use to drain the gas. I have no idea how they got in the bowl as i have cleaned the carb and run 3 filters (tank, in line, carb).

Just came back from a ride. The engine sounds like it's missing a bit, tone is not quite regular a bit off, but overall, ran not to badly in the neighbourhood. Took it out on the main street and opened it up. After about 15 seconds it started to miss like it was running out of fuel (I have 1/2 tank full). I reduced the revs and feathered the throttle to keep it running. Ran very rough on the way home but made it without having to push it this time!

So ..... where should I be looking, doing, replacing?

Thanks,

Doc

Omit the obvious.

Pull the fuel line to the carb and stick it in a bottle. Beer bottle works best. Dunno why.

Turn the petcock on and observe the flow.

Gusher, or prostated?

You said 1/4 inch fuel line, It should be 5/16. That would be a good place to start. Are you sure the 1/4 line you have on there now is fuel line and not vacuum line? Can think of anywhere else black rubber bits can be coming from.

Unrelated to your current issue but with a 1700 you should be using a 172.5 main jet w that 37.5 pilot. or even a 40 pilot (which I recommend on a 1700) You are currently jetted for a 1600.

I was also thinking the Pitcock filters may be clogged but then again I can't remember if the stock one has filters

It's a gusher at petcock and at end of hose at carb connection.

Like Dave, the first thing that jumped out was fuel line size, Then the jetting sounding like a great 1600 setup.

The only other rubber would be the oring on the float valve seat maybe ripped and flapping over the fuel inlet at the seat.

It's new 1/4" fuel line I picked up at the auto store. I'll switch it out for the 5/16" I have.

I'll also try the 172.5 once I get the starvation issue nailed down.

Petcock has filters and they were clean. Petcock is free of debris as I can easily blow throught it.
