accelerator pump help needed 2 Years, 8 Months ago
I could use some advice on the stock 1700 carb. No matter what I do it will backfire through the carb when it gets hot. Especially when I'm stuck idling in traffic. If I pull the air box off and let it idle like I'm stuck in traffic, the accelerator pump actually quits working... at all. Takes several twists of the throttle to see it come back. Then it seems weak. I have taken the accelerator pump apart and it is all good. Not missing any o-ring on edge of bowl, don't see any wear on pump plunger or anything. It just quits squirting when hot.
I have been fighting this since I bought the bike and have never been able to eliminate the back fire, or solve the accelerator pump issue.

When it is three degrees above freezing, it works pretty good, the problem is... I don't.

any ideas?

Replace the o-ring on the pump plunger and the little o-ring and the big bowl seal on the float bowl. The accel pump is loosing it's prime.

Thanks Curt. I don't think there is a O-ring on the plunger..... It is just a metal piston isn't it?

Is the piston supposed to have a O-ring? Or are you talking about where the pump screws into the bowl?

Buy this

4WM-14504-00-00 ROD SET $33.01

This is the plunger kit. make sure all the fuel galley holes are free and not plugged up including the nozzle then install a new plunger/piston kit.

Thanks for the help guys. I ordered a new piston. Will have to wait and see if this solves the problem.

I'm starting to consider a HSR 42. But that's a lot of cash and it looks like a bit of work to make the conversion.

I took it apart one more time to look things over. Piston is perfect. I cleaned the galleys again with Sea Foam. Still clean. The O rings appear fine.... But I applied a very small amount of gasoline safer sealer to brass on o ring. I put a little sealant on the outside of the bowel joint around the galley after the bowel was installed. I don't have Orin's to replace them with and hope they come with new piston.

The temp cooled off so it's hard to tell if it worked.

I turned the PMS out another half turn to 2 3/4. This alone could decrease back fire. I don't know, but she sure flys now!!any little change with this carb has a big impact. Always interesting.

Thanks for the help guys. The experience and expertise on this site is awesome.
