My bike has the end plate cut out of the stock exhaust and it sounds real good but it pops on deceleration. Looked at the spark plugs and they are black and a little sooty. I only get 38 MPG which is not good. I get 45 MPG on my 01.

Will decreasing the jetting and leaning out the carb stop the popping??

The popping could easily be caused by an air leak combined with a rich jetting setup. You did not tell us anyhing about what your problem bike is, what your intake is, or what your jetting is, so it's pretty hard to even venture guesses.

from NE Louisiana. Sounds like you are too rich. If it still has the AIS, you could be getting the popping from that or an intake or exhaust leak.

Others smarter than me will jump in here, but I think you will want to remove the AIS. My understanding is that with the baffles cut out there is not as much back pressure resulting in more air moving than designed for making for a lean condition. The AIS is designed to add air to the exhaust to permit a more thorough burn. Something to do with meeting emissions standards. With a freer flowing exhaust the AIS becomes unnecessary.

Dang, I type too slow.

When i 1st got my 99 roadie she popped bad on decel. I removed the ais and about 80 percent of the popping noise went away. Ur bike is a cali model so u probably got alot emissions on ur bike

38mpg is actually pretty good. Remove your AIS if it's still on there before you do anything else
