car tires? 9 Years, 5 Months ago
|
|
I have heard of people running car tires on their bikes, I wonder how safe it is? Car tires don't need to lean like bike tires. Therefore I wonder if the car side wall can withstand the preasure of the bike leaning? Also the bike tire is more rounded so I would think it would be easier to throw the bike into a lean.
I am just curious if anyone knows how safe it is to run a car tire on a bike? (Not that I would think of doing it myself)

I think I would stay with a soft rubber tire, REMEMBER you only have two quarters of rubber on the road and you want it to grab

There's a couple threads going on the Road Star Project site on this topic. You could check them out.

big no-no this one
car tyres are square in section and as a result, when you lean it over, the bike `rises´ on the corner of the tyre on the inside of the bike and effectively you have the the track of the wheels out of line.
makes for hideous handling.
some people fit a wider tyre on a narrower rim to get the tread to bulge up, but it still aint an ideal solution as car tyre stesses are designed under normal usage. change that, and you´re entering a whole new world of variables.
car tyres for cars, bike tyres for bikes, end of story

Check out the people that actually DO it here at this link... http://forums.delphiforums.com/DarkSiding/start
I tend to ask questions of, and listen to, those that have experience at something... rather than those that have opinions with no experience to back them up.
Good luck!

I guess my biggest question would be "why on earth would you want to put a CT on a bike?" Yikes, that just sounds like an accident waiting to happen........

having ridden a couple of chops on car rears (done in the early 80´s due to wide ruber not being made for bikes), and spoken to folks who have also done it, i´m still going to say it´s a bad idea.
whats the benefits? a couple of extra miles? a bit cheaper?
how much is your life or bike worth?
i had a look at that website, and i´m NOT impressed.
car tyres are designed for cars, not bikes. and as was mentioned earlier, in case of a prang, the insurance companies (skanking gits that they are) would use that as a get out.

BTW, the only time i´ve seen car tyres used on a bike PROPERLY has been on purposly built combinations such as manufactured by krauser, and on trikes (occasionally used on the front on `essex´ type trikes).
they don´t lean, so no problem
