A few people have made the point that my 'wannabe Harley' idea would make Harley riders mad. Could that be because I got basically the same thing they have for less $$?

When I said that my bike felt like crap after riding my friend's Harley, I didn't mean to say that it is a piece of crap. It's just that the Harley felt absolutely solid. Even though I hadn't ridden one before, it instantly felt familiar, for lack of a better word. It just felt really stable on the road. My Honda, being a smaller, lighter bike just didn't compare and felt cheap. I guess it would be like comparing a Toyota Tacoma to my Dodge Ram. Nothing wrong with the Tacoma, but for comfort and stability, it doesn't compare to my Dodge. Apples and oranges, I guess. That said, if a Road Star has that same stability and quality, solid feel, it definitely makes sense to get one. Like I said, the ones I sat on at the stealership felt REAL nice, and you guys with pics have some really sweet looking bikes! I don't know, maybe my idea is all washed up. Seemed good at the time, though!

The same thing? Nah....

In terms of CC's.... the Roadstar has more.
As far as cost, the Roadstar costs less.

Like BB has already said "Do your home work......(read and ask objective people), perhaps get a test ride......then make an informed decision. Buy the one you want, not the one you Think you want, You won't be happy if you do that."

Bottom line is.... it's your call. You buy what you will be happy with and/or can afford.

Like others, I have a friend that owned a `99 Roadstar and he bought a `07 Ultra Classic. He has over 18,000 miles on it and says it's the best bike he's ever owned.

Me?!? I like `em all..... I don't care what you ride, just as long as you ride.

Ride safe. Ride often.....!

Look into both models carefully and get what you like and what you can afford and .... just ride. Even some 1%ers aren't sure that mine isn't a HD ... mostly because they glance too quickly at my front fender badge that reads 'RoadKill' and think it says 'RoadKing.' More times than not, they get a good laugh outta it.

Most aren't snobs about it on either side of the fence. I remember seeing a guy at work with helmet in hand. When I asked what he rode, he turned to me and snapped,"2007 YAMAHA ROAD STAR, man!" I said,"Whoa. I ride one of those, too." The most aggressive answer I every got from a R* rider ... and he was the President of a Star Chapter!

Oh ... and

Good Luck.

You SHOULD ride a Roadie just to compare. IF you are looking for the "best" bike.
BUT, you should decide what you really are looking for. Being brand conscious is as American as apple pie. Some people have brand loyalty to a brand from years of reliable ownership (hard to believe in the HD case, I know )- but many really want the brand for what it stands for to them or maybe to others. Let's face it, many years of Ferraris weren't as good as a Corvette in quality, performance, or cetainly reliability... but they had a dancing horse. They sell an awful lot of Lexus, BMWs, Mercedes, Cadillacs, Hummers... I'd bet 98% for status. heck, everyone would go to Yahoo autos and find the lowest 5yr cost of ownership for the cars in their comfort/space level if status was left out.
Why do women carry Coach purses? They don't function or last any better than any other (or carry any more of the tons of crap my wife takes everywhere).
Some people try to put you down for not owning their brand, others for buying a brand just to say you own that brand. You can't please everyone, so you might as well please yourself. (Hey, that would make great lyrics, huh?)
Be honest with yourself about YOUR reasons for buying whatever bike. Whatever the reason is, it is the BEST reason for you. That one will make you happiest.

I'll be sure to ride a Star before I take the plunge, if not sooner.

Your comment about women and their purses hits home (no, I don't carry one!). I work in an office with 26 women (I'm the only man), and had something happen that was so funny, but now makes perfect sense. One of my coworkers bought a $240+ purse (a Brighten, or something like that) because she got a gift certificate from her daughter, and one from us at the office. When she got home, she excitedly called her daughter to tell her about the wonderful purse she'd bought. While she was talking and going through the various niches in the purse, she noticed a tag inside that said "Made in China". Keep in mind that this was an real, authentic brand-name purse, purchased at the Brighten(?) store. She was pissed! Her daughter then went and got her Coach purse, and saw that it was also "Made in China". So she was mad, too. When my coworker told this story, I just burst out laughing. I had to ask what the difference was between a chinese made purse and a mexican 'knock-off'. I have had a good time with that one ever since! When you work with that many women, you hear a lot of things, sometimes more than you want to know! So, knowing how brand conscious women are made the story hilarious. That said, I guess the moral of the story (for me, at least) is that big bucks doesn't necessarily ensure the best quality. If me buying a Harley is like a woman buying a Coach, then I'll take the 'knock-off', so to speak. Thanks for convicting my of my 'sin'!

How ya doing Rock
I felt the same way as you so I belt my UltraStar and let me tell you I get alot of complement from Harley riders even from some outlaw riders. My bike is a 2003 limited edition and love it,I feel that you should ride what you love and love what you ride.
Good luck on your choice

Love the screen name, by the way!!

it kind of goes back to Adam and Eve. You can make the right choice (road*) or let Eve tempt you with the apple (hd)bad bad bad and fall out of Gods' good graces. The choice is yours. Good luck
ps I know I wouldn't kick the hd out of my garage.
