167.5 main jet 3 Years, 7 Months ago
I'm looking for a 167.5 main jet, and was wondering if anyone has a spare collecting dust in their parts box.

I ordered the 172.5 on accident when I placed my order with JetsRUs.

I have the 170 in my carb now, but I think it's still running a bit rich.

I want to try the 167.5 to see if that works better.

Thanks Curt, I appreciate it.

I was going to order one, but with shipping it comes to almost $14 for one jet.

If anyone is interested in the 172.5 that I have, let me know and it's yours.

Which groove are you using on the needle?

Started out with the clip on the 4th groove from the blunt end, then I moved it back to the 3rd groove with a spacer.

My bike is a 1600, so I think the 167.5 might be better, based on all the reading I've done.

You can get one at any HD dealer or small independent shop even if they have to order it you won't have to pay shipping. If you go to a HD dealer or small shop just tell them it is for an HSR42 carb. If you tell them it is for a Yamaha it will just confuse them and they will say they don't have it to fit a Yamaha.

What makes you think it is running rich? Also if you put a 167.5 main in it move the clip back to the 4th groove.

I tried the local multi-brand shop, and they didn't have anything bigger than a 160 main.

The local Yamaha shop is horrible since changing owners earlier this year, and I won't give them my business ever again.

I haven't tried the local HD dealer yet. Forgot about that option.

I'll try giving them a call to see what they have.

Re:167.5 main jet 3 Years, 7 Months ago
It seems to be putting a lot of soot out of the pipes. At least more than I remember it doing before.

I put new plugs in the bike about a month ago. I haven't pulled them yet to see how they look, gonna try and do that this week.

Would an exhaust leak cause the extra soot? I'm using the "cheapy" felpro gaskets right now. I ordered a new set of oem gaskets, waiting for them to show up.

The bike has been running strong, but I'm trying to squeeze a bit more mileage out of it.

Best I'm getting is around 37-38 mpg riding solo, and keeping it between 65 and 70.
