I really need to stay off RSC..lol. I have been looking for that 6th gear since I got my R* too. I have a friend that probably has an old 65t pulley sitting in his shed. From what I understand I have the 33t front on my 2000 R*.. I'll be doing this asap and will try to use the belt I have before I put out any $$ for a new belt.
George
I think you are set
If anything just find a cheap belt on ebay if yours turns out to be too long

I'm new here but have been following this thread for a while. I have an 05 1700 R* with 40,000 miles. I changed the front pulley to a 1600 pulley, using the stock belt. Like the longer legs but not the noise. The white rollers squawk terribly, even when greased. I cleaned up the shafts and turned down the rollers and got it to quit except when down shifting or hitting a bump while riding two up. The belt is a little tight but If it's loosened, it squawks again. I ordered new shafts and rollers but their slow in coming. The part numbers are the same for both the 1600 and 1700. Anyone else have that problem?

yup mine is a 2005 and the rollers are too close for that larger pulley.
I turned them down on a lathe and problem is solved
some people run without them no problem but I wanted them in there

That's what I thought, but looking at the parts list, the numbers for the rollers and the cover are the same for the 1600 and 1700. Is the 1600 a thinner belt? I ran it on the lift without the cover and I could see it squawk when the rollers hit the lettering on the belt. Lubeing the outside of the belt quieted it for a couple minites. I half heartly attemted to scrape them off but didn't want to ruin the belt.
How much did you turn them down?
I wouldn't want to run with out the rollers, as their shafts were badly groved after only 40,000 miles. they must have been doing their job.
I got that same squawk on the original gears when hitting bumps riding two up, after a new tire install by a Harley guy. Didn't know what it was then, as it stopped in a couple days.

Just pull them out and the noise will stop.
I've got 30K+ on mine, no rollers - pulled by original owner - no problems.
They're not really essential, and I have never, ever heard of a single instance of a Roadstar shoving its belt through the case.

The problem Yamaha was attempting to address was actually an issue with chain driven bikes in the 70's & 80's. I've firsthand witnessed drive chains stuffed into crankcases. However, I've never seen an example of a drive belt doing the same, even on high horse, high torque monsters. The belts sling out the back or sit there and smolder when they break. They don't have the structural qualities of a chain, link upon link, thus the "problem" isn't really a problem in the real world. The term often applied to "fixes" like the rollers is: Over-engineering.
Or you can fuss about with trying to make the rollers work...your choice, your time and energy.
