Fork Spring Spacer????? 2 Years, 10 Months ago
So, I ordered my Progressive lowering springs from Pacific Coast Star on March 30th... and lets just say an unhappy LONG ass time later, they still haven't arrived in time for tomorrows show... So I wanted to temporarily lower the front (since the springs show they will arrive Tuesday)

I read and was told that the fork springs have spacers inside... and I could get PVC and trim it down some shorter than the stock spacers to lower it. HOWEVER. mine dont have spacers??? Mine is just the forks and oil. Am I missing something? Anyone else have ideas besides cutting the springs?

Are you sure the spacers aren't at the bottom of the tubes?

They're supposed to be, but nothing to stop someone from dropping them in first.

Adam, here's an easy way to see if they are in there:

1. Pick up your bike
2. Turn it upside down
3. Shake it around and see if anything falls out.....

What show are you going to tomorrow?

On a serious note, I don't think the stock spring setup in the front ends has spacers.

I don't remember pulling out any spacers when I swapped in my progressive springs.

I just checked the parts fiche, and it doesn't show any spacers either.

As mentioned, stock springs don't have spacers. The after market springs are shorter, and have spacers on top, to set preload

But...

The lowering spacers, are below the dampening rod, and set between the topping out springs and the dampening rod.
ie, if you use the springs and spacers to lower the bike, the entire fork has to be disassembled.

If your following, then you are understanding, that the spacer limits the travel of the fork, keeping it compressed, or shortened.

You can slide the forks up through the triple tree, the same amount, so they are proud of the upper bridge by an inch or so, but some aren't excited about that. The fear being, that the spring can exert enough force on the cap, under max load, to shear off the threads on the cap. Normally, the upper bridge, clamps around that area., and reinforces it. Not everybody thinks it's a real threat.

That's not even remotely a real threat. I've heard that too, but many people do not understand how threaded fasteners behave in tension and compression. Had an aircraft a couple years ago that stalled and FELL 15-20 feet to the runway and blew out the oleo strut caps, but slamming into the ground at 1200 rpm descent rate is FAR different than abosorbing road irregularities when you are in constant contact with the ground. That kind of pressure spike just is not possible.
