Fairing mock up question 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Ok so I am taking a break from my Jeep project to finish up my long over due bike project this weekend.

My question is, when ya'll that have done the Harley fairing conversion mocked up your fairing, did you install all the electronics first then mount the inner fairing or did you mount the inner and then install the electronics? Electronics = Stereo

Electronics after installing the inner. You'll be juggling wires and resetting them if you do them before mounting it. My opinion.

I built mine first, but at the same time I was taking in to account what I needed to mount my stereo.

Mount the inner fairing first, then mount your speakers and radio. Once you have all that mocked up then wire it all.

In everyone's professional opinion can this be done in a weekend including the front end rebuild?

My main reason for asking is because I am doing this all on my own (Which is fine by me I like the quiet time) however I figured it would be easier to mount speakers and speaker grills on my work bench rather than with the inner sitting on the bike. I guess I have a bit of work to do anyways since I am going to racetech springs up front and have to change risers and everything.

Take everyone's advice, and get the inner mounted first.

Once you have everything mounted up, an where it's gonna "live" on the bike, then you can start with all the goodies.

It will make it easier to plan for the wiring and stuff too, once you get the fairing on the bike, and see what you have to work with.

It will be easier getting things lined up and tightened down without the extra weight of speakers and a stereo mounted to the inner.

Just my 2 cents, but no matter how you do it, you're gonna love the finished product.

Ok I got everyone's feedback and I will mock it up first then install goodies, but my questions stands if it can be done in a weekend or not?

If you had everything planned out and parts in hand, bolts, wires, connectors, headlight, etc. I think yes. You could get the fairing installed in a weekend. But with the front end rebuild too? That's gonna be a long ass weekend. I would take a weekend for the rebuild, and another for the fairing. But anticipate something happening and it taking longer. It took me about 5 months!

Re:Fairing mock up question 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Yes, the fairing install can be done in a weekend no problem. When I did mine, it took me about 2 hours to do that actual fairing, including modifying mine to sit a bit higher. I didn't get around to installing the stereo stuff at the same time since I didn't have everything on hand, so mine was fairly quick. But on my RG fairing, I've got around 3 hours in the fairing, and probably another 4 hours in installing the stereo and new speakers, fabbing amp mounts and install, and all the wiring for it too. So with the right amount of beer and motivation, you should easily be able to do the whole fairing in a day. Not sure how long the forks will take as I've never done them before, but if you have everything on hand ready to go, I don't see why that couldn't be done in a day too. So both projects could be done in a weekend, but it will quite a few hours spent in the garage and a lot of adult beverages consumed...
