Please help, rubbing belt. 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Hello,
I have just put a 65T rear pulley on the bike and a 127 belt (1-1/2".
I have adjusted the wheel alignment so that's fine but when turning the rear wheel it runs free then rubs for about 12 inches and then runs free again.
This is the first time I have changed a belt so I don't know if this is ok or not.
Any ideas?

Is it just the one spot on the belt that is rubbing?

If it is fine everywhere else, my guess would be that there is just a "wide" spot on the belt.

I'm sure one of the experts will be able to help diagnose the issue better than me.

It sounds like you don't have the pulley hub seated properly in the wheel hub. Check that the rubber cushions are installed properly. When looking at the spot that the pulley hub and wheel hub come together it should set even all the way around and be completely seated. also check the mounting of the pulley itself to the hub. If all that is good, check to make sure that the pulley isn't bent.

+1 what Dave said sometimes I think just goes in perfectly and sometimes it doesn't I've had the same problem but I never finished installing it. You should be able to see if it's on there perfectly flat

I spray the rubber cushions with a silicone spray. It conditions them and also makes things slide together nicely.

To check the pulley true clamp a plastic rod or flat part on the swing arm or upper belt guard so the end is 1/8" away from the pulley outer edge. Rotate the wheel and watch the 1/8" space if the pulley is cocked or untrue the 1/8" space will change as the wheel rotates. As for trying to get the belt to run true in the middle of the pulley forget it it will always run where it wants and nothing you can do will change that. Just make sure your distances from the swing arm bolt center to the rear axle centers are the same on both sides.
