I went with a K&N oval shape. Other than the logo on the chrome. It looks good and does not block as much of the engine as the original. (Which is now in a box on the shelf!)

dseward, do you know the part # of the K&N filter you used? I've been thinking of going this route as well.

Also, how did you mount yours? Does it just clamp around the carb?

I am just about to install a Thunder Mfg. Smooth Tear Drop with their bike specific billet install kit. All of their kits are made to order usually takes less than 10 days.

But they dyno tested them against the Barons and yes the Barons BAK had great gains but they said they actually felt the results of the Thunder Mfg. in the seat of their pants. Not sure if it's their install kit or what but I will let you know after we dyno tune the bike.

Ya can pay $250 for a COOL filter or you can pay $40 for a K&N filter that has more surface area than any MC aftermarket filer made. Yes I did the $250 route and once you get a scratch on it or it gets gets beat up or the chrome flake you have a crappy $250 filter. That is a LOT of $40 filters. For you guys that want the K&N's like mine the RC-1980 and the RA-077V are what you need to get. Here is the cheapest I have found the but you do have to fab some mount brackets. http://www.ajusa.com/

I just pulled my hypercharger off today and installed a k&n round filter K&N RA-066v for $35 on amazon. and no matter which of the universal k&n filters you go with Outerwears.com makes the rain gear for any of the k&n filters $12. I love mine much more comfortable and nice and clean looking you do need to fabricate a bracket though. can put up a pick once I get one taken.

I went with the RC-1980. Clamps good to the carb. Then took two pieces of heavy hanger iron and made two brackets that I screwed to the backside of the aircleaner then mounted to the two air cleaner bolts on the top of the heads. The K&N is almost big enough to hide the brackets. Been like this for over a year and holds good. Will try to update my sig pic. this weekend so you can see it.

I've done the same thing (RC-1980) and love it. I paid $40 delivered from E bay. The only difference is that I bought a 1"x1/8" strip of aluminum from Lowe's and made my brackets from that. I bent slight offsets in the aluminum (to match the cylinder alinement to the back of the filter) so I didn't have to use spacers. I also drilled the mounting holes out large enough to use the rubber grommets and sleeves from the stock air box. After I had everything adjusted where I wanted it, I polished the aluminum. I haven't re-shot my picture yet, but hope to soon.

Not only does it deliver the air the engine needs, it's amazing how much better the air flows around the cylinders without the stock air box it the way.

Definitely one of the best ($50 total) upgrades a guy can do!

Steve
