spoked rims on 2007 roadstar questions? 2 Years, 11 Months ago
|
|
to start off I have always like the looks of the spoked rims.
On the 1700 I am currently building, my plan was to swap the spoked rims from my 1600.
Now I do know the rear rotor from either the 1600 or 1700 will work and I know I need to use the pulley that came on the 1700.
Am I missing anything. after searching I came across a thread which makes me think otherwise,
http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_fireboard/Itemid,187/func,view/id,797779/catid,60/
basically all you need to do is swap the pulley correct?
I am in the process of removing the bearings from the rear rim at this time and also from the rear hub so I can powder coat the rear wheel hub and the pulley. I have already cleaned the rim with steel wool which took forever but it cleaned up nicely.
so I have been reading a few threads and what it seems is that I need to use all the bearings and seals from the 1700 and the drive hub from the 1700 and the pulley from the 1700
does this sound right

If you swap out the complete rear wheel/pulley setup from bike to bike then you have everything you need....nothing changes.
If you want to switch pulleys on the wheels then it becomes more complicated as the wheel hubs are different widths.

Doc is correct but if you swap the whole thing then you get into the fact of the pulley's being a different width. All that is needed is to remove the dbl bearing on the pulley side of the 1600 spoke rim and install the needle bearing from the 1700 rim in it's place. Then you will also need to use all the spacers from the 1700 rim along with the 1700 pulley. So it comes down to the only difference between them to swap is the needle bearing vs the dbl bearing, and the spacers.then use the correct pulley for the bike and belt.

When I installed the cast wheels on mine all I had to do was swap the pulley. If you move everything including the pulley hub to the 1700 then all you have to do is swap the pulley itself. Bearings don't need to be changed. Now if you're going to try to install the 1700 pulley hub on the 1600 wheel then yeah bearing changes will need to be made.
There is a needle bearing in the outer 1600/1700 pulley hub so pack plenty of grease behind the seal.

So to get this straight if i use the 1600 rim and the 1600 hub and the 1700 pulley i dont have to change bearings? I think im making this harder then it needs to be lol

That's correct. You can even use the pulley for the spoke wheels, the narrow belt will run on it okay. I just assumed you would be putting the cast rims on the 1600 which if it still has the wider belt would need the wider pulley.
If I ever replace my belt I will go with the narrow one and install the narrow pulley that matches the cast wheels. I've thought about replacing the belt anyway so the pulley would match the wheel.

What about running the needle bearings. My understanding is the needle bearing is an improvement over the double bearings as the double bearings have the possibility of spinning.

If this is going on a 1700 all you have to do is pull the dbl roller bearing out of the spoke rim (pulley side) and replace it with the needle bearing out of the cast rim (pulley side). You have all the parts right there you don't have to buy anything. TS installed cast rims on a 1600. That is totally opposite of what you want to do. Don't make a big deal out of this just swap the bearing and get it over with.
To swap the whole unit you will need all of the spacers from the 1600 and then you will end up having the dbl roller bearing that Yamaha updated to the needle bearing to resolve an issue they were having with the dbl bearing.

The needle bearing in the wheel hub is the better setup. If you are going to use the cast wheels on your 1600 then you will need to buy some parts for the spoke wheel. The needle bearing, the inner wheel hub spacer, the outer wheel hub spacer/race that the needle bearing rides on and you will need to replace the inner pulley hub bearing with the extended inner race with a bearing for a 1700 setup. Look at the two pulley hubs, you'll see the difference.

This made it easy. thank you very much
I ordered the needle bearing Yamaha part number 93317-33590-00 BEARING
I just got my 1600 drive hub apart so that will be going to the powder coaters and so will the 1700 pulley
