Key Needed 2 Years, 10 Months ago
Anyone know where I can get a R* key made from the key code without it costing more than a DIY oil change?

Thanks,

Sorry don't know bout key codes but if you're stuck I'd take the gas cap in and have a locksmith go from there. Locksmith charged me $20 to rekey a replacement gas cap and give me the ghost key as a spare. my $.02

If you have the code, any locksmith should be able to cut a key for you. I know there are key blanks for cars that you can use, but I don't remember which ones. For reference, the locksmith I use, charges $7.00 to cut by code, plus the key blank.

Nissan Ilco X248 or YM63 (did a forum search)

I still have a couple of those key blanks I got off of ebay that will work for our R* 's
if you have the blank any key making place can do it, if you try to have them provide the blank, you will have to go to an actual lock and safe key place.
when we made spares of our other yamaha bikes, we had to go to the lock n safe guy in eureka, the hardware store key guys said they weren't able to get the blanks.

pm me if you need a blank or two, I got black and red, I sent another member here a couple of them, if I remember, he said they worked fine to make spares with. No charge or anything, just let me know.

Bob, any good locksmith can make a key with the lock code.

A key made from the gas cap won't be good enough to use in the ignition switch. They only have a couple tumblers, that's why the key doesn't sink all the way in when removing the cap.

100% right.

Cheapest way on a Roadstar is to pull the ignition switch and have a key made using it at a locksmith.
Most charge about $25 for that, more $$$ if the ignition is on the bike.

If you have AAA they might cover a replacement key made. Worth a call to them if you have a policy.

Only place you'll find the key code for a replacement will be on the build/setup sheet (aka PDI sheet) from the original dealer that built the bike.
For a 2000, the odds are pretty slim you'll find that.
I don't know any dealership that keeps 15+ years worth of sales records in arm's reach, or even at the store for that matter.
If you DO find it, replacements pre-cut from MammaYamaha will run about $40 & take up to 4 weeks to deliver.
