how to check main jet size / UPDATD W/ JET SIZES!! 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Hey everyone,

I've had the R* since last fall and still don't think the carb is tuned quite right. It came with V&H longshots and a K&N filter/intake. It popped a lot on decel, so I removed the AIS. I also hand ported the intake manifold and am running the ccv straight to the ground.

It still pops, a lot, when letting off the throttle. Is there any way to check the jet sizes that the po installed if I pull the carb? Or should I just spend the $50, buy a barons kit, and start from the beginning? There are no vac leaks anywhere.

Any direction would be appreciated, i'm just not sure where to start.

Thanks!

There are numbers stamped into the top of the main jet and side of the pilot jet. You can also check the needle (under the black top cap) to see if it is a multi groove needle, how many grooves are in it and what groove the clip is in. All that info will help to determine where to go next with your jetting.

Popping on decel could also be an exhaust leak

Only way to know the jet size is to remove the bowl from the carb, then maybe you could see the size. Easier, and less messy to remove the carb. Knowing the rest of the stuff like pilot and clip position will help get the whole picture too. I would confirm what I had before I bought a kit.

Thanks guys, i'll pull the carb and check the sizes. I'll also check to make sure the coasting enricher isn't cracked/broken.

I've checked, and there are no exhaust leaks at the heads.

Also check the exhaust clamps mid way where the muffler section connects to the head pipes.

Find out the main jet and pilot jet size sizes first and slide needle clip position.
Before you go any farther.
Write them down!

Road test for main jet.
On the highway open it up and the speed should just keep on accelerating.
If there is a flat spot and it will not keep accelerating then the main jet needs to be larger.

If there is backfiring on decel it may have an air leak.

Just a tip...

I always have a hard time reading the size numbers stamped on jets. I remembered I had a photographer's loupe in a box somewhere. Pulled it out and WOW. I can read everything on them now.

The loupe is now sitting in the box of carb parts (needles and jets) so I have it when I'm working on my carbs. Priceless! (but only costs $11.15 with free shipping) on Amazon. LOL
