Once that mix of whatever gets to the valve, the holes in it are small enough, to be obstructed, and if it gets inside the valve, it makes the valve stick closed.
They had issues early on, with them sticking, and some fuel tanks actually deforming. Texasscott, said they remedied that, but I think Signalzero had it happen to him last summer, after going pumpless, and not venting the cap, and IIRC, his bike is an 04 or 05.
Rico had his stop on him in Thailand, while riding in the wet weather, after a few months of no problems running pumpless without venting the cap.
I had issues with mine twice, once a few years ago when I was riding North Carolina and Tennessee. The tank actually sucked in at times and I had to open the cap to vent it getting the loud rush of air. The second time was last summer after going pumpless, it didnt clog but definetly slowed my flow of fuel causing it to starve at higher RPM's and speeds. I removed it and it dosnt do it anywhere near as much. It happens on occasion when the tank is low on fuel and I'm hauling ass.
On to the next problem, clutch slipage.... time for the spring kit.

I pulled out the roll over valve this morning. Interesting valve. It would close off under vacume applied to the top port. I didn't expect that. I thought it would function as a one way valve...
Unless it was Boogered already?

Well apparently a few have had an issue with it. I guess I have missed those post. All I have ever seen was people taking it off just because. As I said before if it did plug up it was from sucking up garbage that without it would be sucked into the gas tank and eventually the carb.

So I have recently installed the HSR 42 Carb, The bike started sputtering as if I run out of gas. The first reaction was to switch the Gravity converted system to the reserve position but that has no effect. The throttle at 3/4 was able to get me to the gas station. Once I opened the tank I would see the fuel line so it wasn't gas level. So I called today seem I missed the step where the Roll Over Valve is suppose to be removed or disconnected.
Is this actually required when switch to a Gravity fed HSR 42Carb? Also is there suppose to be a way to vent the tank or are you suppose to block off the hose at the end under the left side panel?

Mine plugged up with water from a heavy rain down pour. It caused it to work *EXACTLY* opposite of the way it should have. I don't know why... but it is gone now.
Others get plugged from have spiders crawl up into the tube and "nest" in there.

I have an HSR42 and until I got rain in the tube up to the roll over valve... I never had a problem.
(THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DO AND ONLY IF YOU ARE CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO DO IT AND NOT DROP YOUR KEYS).
If you can pull off your gas cap while riding, I was on a very busy highway during the rain and really NO place to pull over for 5-6 miles yet. I pulled in the clutch, turned the bike off... pulled the key out unlocked the gas cap and popped it off a small amount, quickly put it back. Put the key in and turned the bike on... reengaged the clutch... bike started right back up.
I got to the next exit and got under a canopy and proceeded to disconnect my roll over valve. I had zero issue from then on the entire rest of the trip. (In rain 90% of the time.)
After the trip, I worked out that my rollover valve was installed correctly and when dry acted properly. If went, it acted the wrong way... depending on which way it face it always acted the wrong way, blocking air from going up through it. I replace the entire hose from the tank to where it originally was to make sure nothing would dump ON my bike.

I vented the gas cap (per the tech articles).
But, in the case of the roll over valve, can't you just unplug it from the top of the tank to see if it's really a venting problem first?

clearly if the roll over valve is working backwards then you need to roll the bike over to cure it......
shit can that vlave along with a whole host of other things that you don't need on our bike....fuel pump, gas gauge, AIS and so on....

Update,
removing the Roll over valve didn't cure anything, the bike Backfire/ Popping/ Sputtered even more. I'm thinking the AIS removal has something to do with the popping. The roll over valve will be replace just because the S&S instruction recommends it. I didn't mess with any needle setting just went with the default.
I awaiting the full enjoyment factor of the HSR mod..

In 2007-8, we had a rollover check valve problem on Yamaha ATVs. The spring was too strong and the built up pressure from hot gas wouldn't release out. Yamaha denied any problem, so we replaced them with an inline gas filter (that looks like a piece of sandstone) so air would pass through both ways, but unwanted stuff wouldn't come in.
Never tried that on a bike, but it still would be better than no filter at all going into your gas tank.
