Boy, what a long week of stumper. Timing wasn't the best either (of course, it never is).
First off, a couple of facts.
1) The problem began a couple weeks ago on my 1,000 ride from Wisconsin to Kentucky and back. I was using a relocated pump with a filter.
2) The problem started happening more frequent on that ride. Nearly home I could only get 25 miles ata go before it would force me to pull over.
3) the decision to go pump less was to determine if it was my pump going bad. Going pumpless has NOT been the cause of the problem. Following good advice from SWEARpeg, I got the pump less mod completed and
carb dialed in correctly. I intend to stay pump less (but with a filter -ha ha). Once you really understand it, it makes sense. But I know, that takes time to be comfortable with - it did me too.
4) when I painted my tank, I sandblasted it first. While I covered every opening, that aluminum oxide has a way of getting into places.
5) I replaced the carbs components (100 times it seemed). I switched out the coils and spark wires. I replaced my Dyna3000 with a stock CDI. I replaced the spark plugs.
6) Silver_fox (Don) is the one who noticed the accelerator jet not putting out any spray. With 15 minutes to go before the M&G ride, I pulled the carb (now an expert having worked on it on-stop for 3 days thanks to the unbelievable assistance of SKWEARpeg) and used the nozzle of a can of carb cleaner to clear it. I succeeded to get a flow moving through it. Bike ran great. Reassembled and joined the ride just in time. Rode 20 miles until the symptoms returned. Had to pull off in a parking lot and do the carb cleaner accelerator jet cleaning again. This time it was 100% plugged and took a bit of time to clear it out. Success! Ran perfect for a while in order to catch up to the ride at the memorial.
I decided to return to the hotel instead of continuing on the ride with the others (I had tested the groups patience enough)!!! Lol. Pulled into the nearest AutoZone to get a filter for the fuel line. I carry a 2' length of fuel line anyhow, so I thought a quick inline filter, a couple clamps, and a short roadside install would be great. The ONLY 5/16 filter they had was the one pictured. Lol. I wasn't going to be picky. Lol. It's actually growing on me and as SKWEARpeg suggests, maybe some flames would improve it.
Now, with filter and pump less (done to specs), the bike is running pretty good. An occasional cough, but I just think the carb needs a good cleaning and a proper downhill fuel line (good advice Curt) and I will be good as new.
There are so many people who reached out to me with advice, offering parts, offering to meet me if stranded, staying with me on my failures, and generally sticking with it to help resolve. THANK YOU.
I dozens of pages of PM exchanges with Gordon (SKWEARpeg) who not only kept me positive and working on solutions, but took the time to actually educate me. His patience was near sainthood. Lol. THANKS.
Don (Silver_fox) travel 100 miles round trip on 9-10:30pm Friday night of the M&G in order to grab some stock coils and CDI box in order to rule those out. Also, for being the one to discover the actual issue!!!! THANKS.
Dennis (Dchopper) for providing me with a fresh set of spark plugs. THANKS.
John (Fastjohnny) who waited with Scooter76 and my bike on I-43 until I grabbed my truck and trailer and then drove to GreenBay (about 3 hours delayed). THANKS.
Sybille (Scooter76) who always pulled to the side and stuck with me during those frustrating moments. Always eager to lend a hand and offer encouragement. THANKS.
Terri (scootergirl) for locating me in the cage and escorting myself and Scooter76 to the Motorcycle Memorial to meet up with the group.
and finally, to the RSC community in general. For the countless PM's offering advice, parts, and sympathy. THANKS.
I know there are many of you who jumped in and offered help and assistance. If I have not specifically thanked you, please know that I don't wish to ignore your efforts. But the shear volume of support would make this post longer than I already have made it. For those folks 8 say THANKS.
